Felton Road versus Burgundy

Introduction
A chance to try the new release Felton Road wine wines - counterbalanced by burgundy. The white burgundy chosen was especially well chosen as it has a similar price point to the Felton Roads while the Arlot burgundies were as expected - basically from a different planet in terms of style.
2012 Felton Road Chardonnay Bannockburn 87 Points
New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn
Quite Chablis-like but with slightly more tropical notes. Very light oak, touch of pear, gorgeous mouth feel - youthful but possesses a layered and complex feel.A less worked style than many chardonnays and an excellent example of Central Otago chardonnay. Very good.

2011 Felton Road Chardonnay Block 2 90 Points

Certainly a step up from the Bannockburn bottling - this wine spends 17 months in neutral oak versus 12 for the B-burn. As a consequence the wine has more of a toast character, a much more involving texture - which is both very acid and yet smooth and mealy complexity that will develop beautifully with age. This just needs time in the cellar. A wine built around complex texture.

Spicy nose of clove and cinnamon - beautiful spice on the palate with a bit of alcoholic heat. Dry and savory, touch of lime peel and chalk. Well judged structure and body - very French.

2012 Felton Road Pinot Noir Bannockburn 89 Points

The Felton Road style has evolved considerably over the past ten years into a less opulent and more elegant style. Both tasted of their terroir, in my opinion but certainly the new releases enjoy a level of transparency that the vintages of the turn of the century did not enjoy. Candy cane and ginger bread nose,light fresh strawberry and white pepper. Medium/light body with plenty of intensity - a fruit dominant wine that enjoys good balance. Pleasing drying tannins on the finish. The tell-tale candied Central Otago marker is present but under control. Very, very good.

2012 Felton Road Pinot Noir Cornish Point 90 Points

Spicy strawberry aligned with minerality. A more structured wine than the B-burn bottling - excellent mid palate authority - sweet fruit balanced by savory character, finishing with powdery fine tannins. Kirsch aspects add to the impression of depth to this fine wine.

Gorgeous nose of great depth and spice with a candy cane edge. Very ripe black kirsch , beautiful balance. A longer, more structured and complex bottling than the Cornish point wine of the same vintage.

Currently a reticent nose of game, strawberries, dense cherries and earthy complexity. Herbal edge to the mid palate ending in a lovely resolved finish. This is a very structured wine featuring dark and dense flavors and a spicy edge. Complex, complete and long. Needs time in the cellar to open up and resolve further. 93+

2008 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St. Georges 90 Points

Nose of iron, blood, cherries and earth. Tasted next to new releases of Felton Road, this came across (not surprisingly) as more complex and is currently more harmonious. From a difficult vintage, this wine showed plenty of presence and fruit. Outstanding.

2008 Domaine de L'Arlot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 91 Points

Very light, slightly stemmy nose but possess a great core of fruit. Earthy dark toasted oak, complex mineralty with drying tannins on the finish. Delicious texture in a soft quiet way. Ready now and outstanding.
