Teeny, tiny Pegau vertical

Opened some 07 and 08 Pegau side by side.

• 2007 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 93 Points

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  This is a classic old world styled CDP with rich, ripe red fruit, lots of earth and garrigue, licorice and pepper with some fairly firm, chalky tannins on the finish.

• 2008 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 90 Points

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  The dark and red fruit, while quite nice, was abit on the reserved side. There's still characteristic earth and garrigue, and this is very Pegau. The tannins are very soft and reserved. All in all, this is drinking very well tonight.

After tasting these side by side, I have to say that while there was indeed vintage variation, these were both quite delicious. The 07 was a much lauded vintage while the 08 was an often maligned vintage. But when tasted together, the distinction between the two Pegau's was't that terribly pronounced. The fruit in the 07 was richer and more high toned, but the tannins were abit more aggressive. The 08, on the other hand, displayed fruit that was abit flatter, but the tannins were much softer and well integrated. While both were enjoyable, the 07 was richer, but the 08 softer and more ready to go and was by far a much better qpr.
