Introduction
Surprising for the summer, nearly the entire group was able to get together. My first time at Market 17, though not for many others, which offered fine fixed menu choices as arranged by Jorge (gracias amigo!) and entitled "Internet Wine Nerds" which was quite appropriate. All the courses I tried were delicious and look forward to dining there again. Really great seeing everyone and sharing recent stories and travels. Despite the large crowd, nearly everyone was able to taste each wine, nearly all of which showed well except for a lone corked Pegau. Only the Giscours was decanted, and some wines may have shown better with more air or decanting.
1990 Schloss Schönborn Hochheimer Hölle Riesling Auslese 91 Points
Germany, Rheingau
Ripe apple and pear fruit that was very youthful for its age. Medium body and acidity with no petrol notes. Long finish that could of used just a bit more acidity.

2010 Maison Bleue Grenache Le Midi Boushey Vineyard 92 Points

Medium to full body with blackberry and dark raspberry fruit, medium acidity with plenty of spice and pepper. Probably liked more than most others, but this is a style I like for Grenache, bright and focused with lots of pepper.

1999 Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 90 Points

Medium bodied dark cherry fruit with leather and truffle notes. Medium long finish that still was a little tannic and bitter, and unfortunately was not decanted and got little air prior to serving. My suspicion is this would have shown better with decanting.

2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 92 Points

Reserved cherry fruit with some leather and dustiness. Medium body and medium to high acidity that left a little tartness on the finish. This got better with air, and needs at least an hour to begin to shine. Recently released and will improve with age and is built to go the long haul.

2004 Château Montrose
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe
From magnum with no decanting. Dark cherry and currant fruit, medium body and acidity, with a little earth and a hint of dill. Jack got bell pepper notes which was a big turnoff for him. This did not show as well as expected, but I think this will improve with more time in the bottle (more air or decanting would likely have been beneficial as well).

1995 Château Giscours 91 Points

This was the only wine decanted this evening and showed a lovely floral Margaux nose, with currant and dark cherry fruit on a light to medium body frame with medium acidity. The tannins were still firm, yet still drank nicely and is more mature than many 95's.

Blackberry fruit, full body with medium acidity. Bright and lithe for New World syrah, with a nice long, complex finish. Drinking fabulous at this stage. Really enjoyed.

Mostly currant fruit with medium body and acidity and fully resolved tannins and light leather and earth on the finish. Mature Bordeaux at its peak now in a classic, understated style. Surprisingly good showing.

2004 Château Calon-Ségur 92 Points

Much better showing than I expected. Medium to full bodied currant fruit with medium acidity and cedar and graphite notes on the finish. Tannins still need a bit more time (or more air/decanting which this did not get), but still drinking nicely with some room to improve further. Mad I only bought one bottle of this after this showing.

2005 Core Elevation Sensation Alta Mesa Vineyard 92 Points

From magnum with no decanting (not required). Mostly blackberry fruit with medium body and low to medium acidity. Surprisingly soft, round and supple for a New World rhone blend, with more reserved fruit, elegance and complexity than expected, likely due to its age. Really in a great spot now.

2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 93 Points

A nice golden color with mostly honey and some apricot, peach, and almond notes. Viscous, concentrated and sweet, I felt it could use just a bit more acidity to balance all the richness. Didn't get as much complexity and layers as I have from other 01's, but still a really solid sauternes that shows the class and balance of the vintage.
