Note - day after flying back from the UK hence a bit tired and palate may have been jaded (though I felt fine)

In olden days they used to show the Vat wines but budgets are obviously considerably tighter nowadays. The bracket was disappointing, which is sad.

• 2007 Tyrrell's Sémillon Single Vineyard HVD

  Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

  green apple and touches of citrus, slight honey, slight earthy notes. On the palate, apple, honey…a slight metallic note, textured with alcohol warmth on the finish and a slightly meaty quality. A mature semillon. Nothing wrong with it but I think I find the Vat 1 just a bit more fun.

• 2012 Tyrrell's Chardonnay HVD

  Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

  Toast, lemon, slight spice…in the mouth citrus and oak, out of balance…because of youth? If so, why sell it in this state? to cellar? Not very impressed I must confess

• 2011 Tyrrell's Shiraz Single Vineyard Stevens

  Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

  Spice, caramel, vanilla oak notes over cream, black pepper and red currant. In the mouth sour redcurrant asserts it's dominance over the oak. Medium plus length. Meh.

• 2010 Tyrrell's Shiraz Brokenback

  Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

  red berry, slight black pepper and cherry…in the mouth the red fruit drops quickly leaving…nothing. Nah. Not at $20.

Very meh for me. They showed a Vintage Port style Shiraz as well which was okay but ridiculously overpriced compared to e.g. Seppelts VP (goes for about $10 a half bottle)

• 2012 Coates Wines Pinot Noir

  Australia, South Australia

  perfumed, clove, earth, slight red cherry. In the mouth the cherry proves to be sour and slight green and is chased away by mouth coating tannin. Sigh.

• 2009 Coates Wines Sangiovese

  Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

  vanilla, caramel, spice over cherry. In the mouth medium plus acid and tannin but only medium minus flavour intensity with cherry hidden under spice. A touch too much oak without the fruit to support it, for me.

• 2010 Coates Wines Touriga Nacional

  Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek

  Medium minus aromas of herbs, orange, toast, bergamot and a slightly dusty quality. In the mouth there is medium plus acid and body but the wine lacks fruit flavour…it's all a bit insipid.

An excellent idea ruined by showing two different vintages. Surely the point would be to compare like with like? Still, ours not to reason why. I enjoyed the first two more than the latter two despite being a bit of a fan of the Pegau as a rule.

• 2008 Telmo Rodríguez Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra Sierra de Gredos

  Spain, Castilla y León, Cebreros

  Mineral, spice, slight metallic red berry…in the mouth there are flavours of concentrated red berries, spice, medium plus body, textured with alcohol warmth on the long finish. Hmm.

• 2008 Telmo Rodríguez Pegaso Granito Sierra de Gredos

  Spain, Castilla y León, Cebreros

  medium minus aromas of slight farmyard funk and gun smoke, tending to black fruit and spice. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acid and medium plus chewy, chunky tannin which is savoury and mouth coating and lends structure and weight to the medium minus flavour intensity fruit. Nice.

• 2010 Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Ripe red berries, black pepper and spice, caramel, cream and a slight herbal note. On the palate juicy, savoury red berry fruit dominates. Nice but fair amount of bottle variance, this one is completely clean with none of the funk I recollect getting previously...

• 2010 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

  France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  Cinnamon, spice, red berry, slight smoke, leather and farmyard funk. In the mouth the wine is savoury with talk like tannin, some spice and touches of volatile acidity (which I didn't pick up on the nose). Hmm

not much lit my fire except the first two Spanish Garnachas in the last bracket - the Granito in particular was something I could have revisited happily.
