Introduction

Wines tasted blind in four series of six wines.

The wines were not decanted and opened around 2 hours before the tasting.

Flight 1 - White Burgundy (1 Note)

  • 1993 Pierre Damoy Chapelle-Chambertin 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: Very light in color. Earthy and herbal nose, malt and ripe notes. The wine is dominated by acidity, quite dry, but has a good length to it. Now fully mature. Drink now.

  • 1970 Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: Light brick red in color. Nose of prunes and herbs. Nice sweetness and well integrated tannins. Quite a long finish. Past its peak.

  • 1976 Domaine Henri Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru La Grande Rue Flawed

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Unfortunately we had a flawed bottle. Underneath the TCA there were signs of a great wine lingering. Even I expect this wine to be past its peak, I am still curious to taste this wine out of a good bottle.

  • 1995 Antonin Guyon Corton-Clos du Roy 87 Points

    Tasted blind: A quite promising nose of leather and caramel. But the expectations quickly turned into disappointment when I tasted the wine. This wine is very much dominated by acidity, short, dry and out of balance. Drink now,

  • 1972 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: What a surprise, I expected this wine to be dead but to everyones surprise this wine still had some breath left. The color was not the prettiest almost cloudy. But the nose showed nice secondary flavors of prunes and malt. The taste was quite a bit a different story all dominated by acidity. This DRC is past its prime but is still drinkable. Just a caveat, once opened it fades very very fast. Drink now (or sell).

  • 1995 Robert Mondavi Winery Pinot Noir Reserve 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Tasted blind: This wine was the positive surprise at this extensive pinot tasting. Originally placed in the same flight with the Burgundy pinots out of the 70s as I expected it to be past its prime. But quite the opposite happened, the wine was still fully present, having a wonderful nose of tobacco, fresh citrus flavors and Earl Grey tea. The taste shows berries and again tea notes. Quite long and complex. Great effort from Mondavi. Drink now - 2020.

  • 2001 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: Nose of coffee and berries. Very balanced and pleasant tannins. Nice Pinot note with well integrated acidity. Now at a nice drinking phase. Drink now - 2025.

  • 2005 Kistler Pinot Noir Cuvée Catherine 94 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

    Tasted blind: Nose of mint and plums. Quite rich, sweet and long. This Pinot should not be compared to a Burgundy, it has quite a different style. Many of the tasters did not like this style as they were missing the typical Pinot notes. My comparison is like a classical Syrah (Guigal La Mouline) to a great Australian Shiraz.

    It is a Pinot-Punk, but I found that exactly this personality made this wine interesting, it is a fun wine at the beginning of its drinking window. Decant or put away for a few more years.

  • 2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: Quite light in color. Wonderful berry nose with spices and herbs. Very balanced, this is not a wine of power that stuns on the first sip. But after a while it opens up and it shows a wonderful length, complexity and elegance. This is for me how Pinot should taste. All in perfect balance. Great wine for a somewhat difficult vintage. Drink now - 2025.

  • 1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: Very smooth and well integrated tannins, feels still quite youthful. Taste of black tea, raspberries. This is a wonderful wine, very balanced and elegant. I see much more to come down the road. Put aside for another 5 years.

Flight 5 - Local and World Pinots (6 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: Nose of coffee, black tea and Riccola pastilles. Red berries. Nice blance and well integrated tannins. It is a wine that had very mixed reviews within our round. Some called it simple and light. While I understand this argument, I found the lightness and elegance quite "refreshing". Much better than the 2001 Rousseau Charmes Chambertin I just drank a few weeks ago. Drink now - 2025.

  • 2005 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing 92 Points

    Tasted blind: Deep intensive red. Quite a nice sweetness of red berries. Quite rich but very well balanced. I will wait a few more years before I touch my next bottle. I expect it to find more balance in the next few years. Drink 2015 - 2025.

    Tasted blind: Nose of coffee and vanilla. Quite a bit acidity and a harsh tartiness. Lacking balance. Either too young or in a very difficult phase. A wine I need to retry in a few years.
