Flight 1 - Domaine Ponsot (7 Notes)

First ever visit to Domaine Ponsot. Certainly fascinating discussion of every aspect of Burgundy, its history and future. The amazing cuverie has an exposed wall behind glass of the actual layered bedrock that makes Burgundy what it is. Listening is one thing, but seeing this wall, with live vine roots, is sensational.

    Barrel tasting at Domaine. Very fresh and bright apple and lemon aromas. Good energy, very precise with lots of fruit purity.

  • 2012 Domaine Ponsot Corton-Charlemagne

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Almost completely done with ML. Lemon, lemon peel aromas. Very pure aromatic start. Precise and linear to start, more density and power emerge middle to finish. My first opportunity to taste this from any vintage, very impressive. Laurent says this is probably 40% Aligote.

  • 2012 Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Impossible for me to fairly assess given where this was in the malolactic fermentation process. Interesting that this was seemingly one the latest wines to be completing ML.

  • 2012 Domaine Ponsot Griotte-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Lots of cherry aromas, both tart red cherry and black cherry. Charming and alluring start, very Griotte in aromatic character. Larger scaled on palate, very robust and assertive. Very good spice and dense fruit throughout.

  • 2012 Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Much darker, meatier fruit in every way vs the Griotte just tasted. Brooding already with firm tannins that are still very fine.

  • 2012 Domaine Ponsot Clos Saint-Denis Très Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at domaine. 9-10 hl/ha in 2012, most vines planted approx 1905 according to Laurent. Sensational in every way. Big spice start with late summer flowers. All red fruit - cherry and lots of strawberry. Great textures coming from impressive acidity, minerality, tannins and lots of power emerging on finish. 96-97 point potential.

  • 2012 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Meatier, denser than the CSD just tasted, even if less alluring or forthcoming today. Black cherry, big spice, firm finish, certainly very cellar worthy. 95+ point potential.

Flight 2 - Jean-Jacques Confuron (11 Notes)

Tasting with Sophie (Confuron) Meunier. My first visit. Sophie told a great story about the origin of the Confuron domaine upon the division of the old Charles Noellat holdings. I had thought the Confuron vineyards had been retained and not sold to Leroy. They were in fact part of the sale, but Sophie asked Mme. Leroy if some parcels could be excluded from the transaction so she could take her inheritance in the form of land vs money and Mme. Leroy graciously agreed.

Flight 3 - Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé (4 Notes)

Visit and tasting with Jean-Luc Pepin. Tasting 2011s today. Discussed 2012 yields, with 20-25 barrels of Musigny, vs. "normal" production of 40 barrels. Lowest recent production was 13 barrels in 2003.

  • 2011 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

    Tasting at Domaine. Mostly black and blue fruit aromas with some clove, thyme and black pepper. Slightly more ripe on palate. Firms up middle to finish but stays fresh. I didn't realize this cuvee always includes Vogue holdings in Fuees and Baudes 1ers.

  • 2011 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    Tasting at Domaine. Black fruit, sneaky spice in background. Great balance with an expanding finish. A step up in density from the charming Villages wine. I also didn't realize that 1995 was the first vintage for this wine, until then it was included in the Villages wine.

  • 2011 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    Tasting at Domaine. Dense and somewhat voluptuous for the vintage, showing blackberry and blueberry with an intense, dense aromatic character. Fat and forward flavors to start, then a slightly abrupt and firming middle, followed by an opulent finish. VG+ potential, but will need 5+ years in the cellar.

  • 2011 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    Tasting at Domaine. Huge mostly black fruit with some dark chocolate, black pepper, allspice, cloves and fresh herbs. Incredible density from start-to-finish, very firm at middle through end, so not that outgoing right now, although very alluring, particularly aromatically, 93-94 point range. Alas we were unable to taste the 2011 Amoureuses today, always a great contrast with the Musigny.

Flight 4 - Domaine Georges Mugneret/ Mugneret-Gibourg (8 Notes)

I can't think of many better places to end the day than here, tasting the sisters' wine.

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Bright red cherry and strawberry aromas. Same flavor profile, both with baking spice hints. Classic and very good for its level.

  • 2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Slightly reductive start. Both red and black fruit on nose and palate with a Vosne spice character. Slight firm in middle, savory spice re-emerging on finish. Very good throughout.

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Slightly floral start with all red fruit aromas. Big fruit, subtle spice flavors. Very elegant, mineral driven with sensational mouth feel. This tasting won't necessarily 100% reflect the final assemblage due to varied age of oak barrels.

    Barrel tasting at domaine. All red fruit with great spice. Strawberry, red cherry, anise, soy all come through. Super elegant start, picking up weight, density and power from middle to finish, showing lots of grand Cru intensity at end.

  • 2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin

    Barrel tasting at domaine. All black fruit aromas with very subtle spice. Big and dense on palate with a meaty character. Very impressive, elegant structure. Not quite showing sauvage yet today, but I expect this will emerge.Very cellar worthy.

    Barrel tasting at domaine. Sensational aromatic start with a wide cross-section of cherries. Mostly red cherry flavors with very elegant savory spice in great support. Very well textured. Excellent wine.

  • 2011 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Tasting at domaine. Floral start with fresh roses, spring flowers, bright red cherry, then licorice and clove hints. Bright red cherry flavors as well with elegant tannins, subtle spice. Should drink well young, but also has the balanced substance to age nicely for a couple of decades.

  • 2009 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Tasting at domaine. Slightly reductive to start, which dissipated in just a few minutes. Very ripe and lush red and black cherry with some boysenberry in the mix. Clearly more dense and concentrated than the wonderful 2011 just tried. Powerful throughout, particularly on finish. Long, well textured for a 2009. Dancing on my tongue.
