The Boerne Wine Club ended the summer with a Riesling tasting. No Texas wines appeared? We started with the drier styles of Alsace and Austria. Moved onto a variety of Oregon and Washington state versions and then into a range of German wines, mostly Spatlese and Ausleses
We threw in a quick Bordeaux blind for those that were overwhelmed with all the fruit.
We finished with another small Auslese and a rare Okanagan Icewine from Mission Hill
The 2004 Trimbach Frederic Emile was the clear favorite, with very high marks for the Alexana and the Eroica.
The 1994 Pontet Canet served blind with dinner was a real winner, with most thinking it a younger Californian or Right Bank.
2003 Schmelz Riesling Smaragd Steinriegl

2006 Weingut Hirsch Riesling Gaisberg
Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal
Whew! Strong Petrol, almost kerosene nose that was off-putting to some, and others loved it. Very typical to me and lovely. bone dry. Not for the faint of heart

2012 Charles Smith Riesling Kung Fu Girl
USA, Washington
really quite a wine for the price. Bright lime, peach flavors with a tangy acidity to cut through a thick balsamic dressing. Nice wine

A bit simple, but great wine for the price. It's Riesling and great on a hot summer night.

Extremely reliable American Riesling. Seemed a bit simple tonight, but decent bright lime and honeysuckle flavors.

2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
pale golden yellow. Much lighter than I anticipated. some sweet peach and lime flavors, lacking any petrol and a bit light in acidity, but impeccably balanced. I don't think this has the stuffing or acidity for longer aging. I say, drink up in its lovely rather ethereal state right now.

1994 Château Pontet-Canet
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Served blind to the group at a Riesling tasting.
Amazingly dark plum purple for a 19 year old wine. It's funny the Merlot component really shines through, making this seem like a younger right-bank wine. Drinking beautiful, but seemingly not going anywhere. The best of the case so far.

1999 Reichsrat Von Buhl Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Auslese
Germany, Pfalz
much lighter than expected, still rather pale straw colored. light peach and petrol aromas. On palate closer to spatlese sweetness and mouthfeel, but lovely. some acidity, but probably good to have opened now.
