Introduction

4 red wines. DARN it's hard. The whole group only nailed one grape - the PN.
Food was great and the spirits were high.

As usual, the PN did not explain to my palate why it was an interesting wine.

As usual, I realize I need to practice harder :-)

Flight 1 - The Flight (4 Notes)

The CF was, by far, tonight's best wine according to my tastes. Also married the cheese, a slightly hairy goat Cheezus of Swedish make.

  • 2006 Le Vigne Cabernet Franc Le Vigne di Domenico 91 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

    This is a very well made wine that completely lost me as far as varietal is concerned...
    I can't find anything in it that corresponds to my notions of CF. So, once again, I realize I need to study harder! Ah, the chores...
    Beautiful red color. Nose is of deep plums (some said cherries) and a spicy element that confused me completely. In the mouth this has M body, M++ acids and M+ tannins.
    Very well made, distinct and quite attractive. Won more appeal as the evening went on. My WOTN.
    Has more to give for several years to come.

  • 2008 Amayna (Viña Garces Silva) Pinot Noir 79 Points

    Chile, San Antonio Valley, Leyda Valley

    Perceived as ester based candies and overly sunny.
    Pale red.
    Nose of raspberry jelly candies.
    In the mouth just a non-complex, über-easy-drinking ester based wine. M acids, low tannins and sun bath. More for smurfs than for humans.
    Rated: "Not ever in my cellar" by me.
    Some ppl really loved it.

  • 2007 Hug Cellars Syrah Cedar Lane Vineyard 84 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Seco

    Dark red with a purple hue.
    Nose: Raw wood dominating too much.
    Mouth: Fruity young wine, hollow with M+ acids, M+ tannins and M+ body. Well balanced structure. Quite attractive if it wasn't for how the wood is expressed today. Hopefully the raw wood will balance out nicely and the wine reach for 90+. (However, far from there with today's performance.)
    Aroused my curiosity, and I'd would love to revisit in 2022. Just to see where it goes with its fulsome élevage. Fulsome or great?
    I just can't say today, but am forever full of hope :-)

  • 2005 Château Le Doyenné 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux

    Red wine.
    Nose is pure and typical Bordeaux (but I changed my guess to BdM... from cherries and high acids) with CS and Merloty aromas that mix nicely with rusty iron and hint of Brett.
    Taste has high acids and a very earthy finish. Still young and sprawling with M+++ tannins. Has a hollow mid-palate and slightly short finish.
    May be able to beef up its expression given a few more years in the cellar. Has some complexity and in early maturity stage.
    Quite well done and great QPR. Has several more years to go.
    Did very well with the lamb-based pasta bolognese. *yummy*
    Tonight's second wine for my palate.

Closing

After the tasting came an amazing Calvados. *yumm* So I walked home in a happily tipsy mode :-)
