Introduction

My first tasting organized by Alko, an opportunity to taste some of the wines available in our lovable monopoly. Today the theme was Tuscany. The lecture was nice with information about the region and its foods. The tasting was organized well.

Flight 1 - Starting with a white (1 Note)

2012 Antinori Villa Antinori Bianco Toscana IGT 85 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

A grassy, citrusy smell, hints of flowers. Good acidity but quite full-bodied, slightly sweet. Quite nice, perfectly quaffable.

Flight 2 - The next three reds we tasted double blind (3 Notes)

2010 Rocca delle Macìe Chianti Vernaiolo 85 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti

Cherry, some flowers, perhaps a hint of rubber. Quite acidic, some tannins, cherry, not a lean Chianti, nice.

2010 Vignamaggio Chianti Classico Gherardino 87 Points

Cherry but also some more dark fruits, oak is evident, hint of tomato paste. The palate has blackberries, good body to it, tannins, acidity in place. Nice now and could use a few years in the cellar.

Very expressive, lots of fruit, cassis, vanillary oak, very easy to drink, fruity but lots of tannins, inky, quite international in taste and smell.

Flight 3 - Then came the more expensive wines, all need cellar time (3 Notes)

2008 Tenimenti Angelini Vino Nobile di Montepulciano La Villa 86 Points

Quite sharp, tomato paste, gunpowder, hint of barnyard. Lots of acidity, cherry, lots of tannins. Doesn't seem to be at it's best now, leave in cellar for several years.

Very shy on the nose, cherry, quite hard, but still smooth, very young, leave for many years yet, will get better.

This is ready to go now, lots of cassis on the nose, chocolatey, oaky, blood, even some canned corn aromas(?!). A big wine that is very good now and could get better with a few more years on it.

Flight 4 - Finally a sticky to end the tasting (1 Note)

Caramel oranges, nuts, apricots, very sweet, but low acidity, I'm not impressed and I wouldn't buy this for myself.
