Introduction

A wonderful evening hosted by DB77 -- generous contributions by all and a lot of great wine. Of course, take all notes with a grain of salt -- there was a lot of consumption, so certainly some palate fatigue, though I did my best to write things down.

  • 2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah Labels 91 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

    crushed red fruit profile. tasty, but not as much depth as the others in this flight.

    very full bodied fruity profile. chocolate comes through on the palate. nose disappoints, but the palate delivers.

  • 2009 Sine Qua Non Syrah The Thrill of... 95 Points

    awesome young nose on this. the palate backs it up with a serious black fruit profile, some nice herbal character, and blood. plays well above its already high esteem.

    very nice. black candied fruit, some mint on the palate. wonderfully long and complex finish. my least of the flight, but this was still great.

  • 2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah Dangerous Birds 96 Points

    beautiful red and black fruit profile is broken up by a fresh acidity that is needed in a tasting like this. all the parts are there. sweet spice shows up late on the midpalate and lingers into a long finish. this may have been the best of the flight from an objective standpoint, but for my taste is was a damn good #2.

  • 2008 Sine Qua Non Syrah The Duel 96 Points

    delicious. loads of fruit (of course), but also a nice smoky chocolate character -- almost like the bacon chocolate bar. neck and neck with the dangerous birds in this flight. i preferred this for my tastes though it didn't quite have the freshness of the dangerous birds.

    only with this group would you have a backup bottle of JFTLOI on hand... Still very youthful, with lots of time ahead of it. Red fruit, dried sweet spice (clove). really elegant mouthfeel and a lovely finish.

  • 2003 Sine Qua Non Syrah Papa 92 Points

    there seems to be some bottle variation in the papa, as ive had 2-3 awesome bottles and 2-3 good, but not special bottles. this, unfortunately, was the latter. although there was a nice structure, the fruit was slightly sour and more in the cranberry family. this gave a perception of too much acidity, though i dont think it was actually high acid. some nice secondary notes show up on midpalate and linger into med(+) finish.

  • 2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah The 17th Nail in My Cranium 97 Points

    dark, brooding, beautiful... there was actually a tiny bit of TCA on this bottle (I'm not that sensitive, but others picked it up) -- but this wine was good enough to battle back and the quality showed through. lots of pepper on this. black fruit. a finish that doesn't quit. i dont know how this always comes out on top in almost any lineup, but it is simply a stunning wine.

    how could this not be a letdown (and how spoiled are we that a wine i score 95 seems like a letdown?). this was beautiful. lovely black fruits, meat, and smoke. but it was painfully young -- especially coming from mag. still, a wonderful finish.

  • 2007 Forsythe Vineyard (Alban) Mourvèdre The Mason 97 Points

    I could not believe how good this was. If there's one wine at this tasting that made an impression on me, it was this. I had no expectations for it, and it was stunning. Lots of dark blackberry fruit, with some nice clove flavors and a light smokiness. long long finish. wonderful.

    this was disappointing after the other two mourvedres. sour on the palate with the fruit seeming a touch underripe. the structure was good, but im not sure the fruit will come around enough.
