TN: EWG Wine Dinner at Tom's

From the gougeres to the chocolate souffle and everything in between, this was a very enjoyable evening with fantastic food, fantastic wine, and great company. Many thanks to Tom for hosting and for the superb work in the kitchen.

• 2000 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 94 Points

  France, Champagne

  Beautiful light biscuity nose, ripe melon fruit, pistacchio and an intense vinous streak; powerful and intense yet creamy, soft and elegant. Super long finish. Starting to hit its stride but has a long way to go. Epitome of great BdB.

  Tight, somewhat aggressive acidity, very bright, tart. This needs time to flesh out. The 2000 blew this away, but I believe this will hit its mark in another 4+ years. 91-93

• 2002 Bernard Hatté Champagne Special Club 90 Points

  France, Champagne

  Bright, mineral, almost a green-herbal element to it with wet chalk-wet rock aspect. High toned under ripe tree fruit, tart apple, aggressive bubbles, still young. Good solid bottle but unfortunately came after the 2000 Taittinger Comtes.

• 1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Rosé 94 Points

  France, Champagne

  Immediately out of bottle pre-dinner this was tight, lean, very mineral, no real fruit to speak of, and a bit cold. Drank through out the evening and by dinner's end it had blossomed into a complex, elegant, beautiful wine. Light forest berry fruit, white and red flowers, still lots of chalky minerality, and a sort of quiet power. Stunning in after 2 hours, but still in diapers. 94-95

• 2002 Jean-Pierre Mugneret Echezeaux 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

  Lovely pretty nose of mountain berries (strawberry), and a light earthy minerality. Somewhat delicate on the palate, but great intensity, fine tannins, and long finish. Loved the understated balance on this. Still young, but showed very well tonight. Probably the WOTN of the Burgs for me. 92-93

  Medium dark ruby red; red and black berry fruit with good dose of wet earth; on the darker side after the Echezeau, but good balance, more grainy tannins, and although somewhat straightforward, solid, classic, structured (young) Giroud.

  Dark concentrated ruby color; clearly more extracted and weighty than the Giroud Vosne with black and red berries, sous-bois and an slight herbal, sappy element. Medium full body and medium, ripe tannins. Clearly shows its vintage. Not too expressive, needs 10 years. Interesting how the flight went counter-intuitively from lightest (GC) to medium (Vosne), to the heavier (Chambolle). 91+

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

  Classic Pinot small red berry fruit, red flowers, not too aromatic, but bright, vibrant, and high acid. Still seems young and not sure these will ever soften up.

  In contrast to the Jadot, this was somewhat burly and dark with blackberry, forest berries, dark leather, bark. Big tannins, powerful, somewhat four square from what I remember (this was the last Burg of the night).

• 2000 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg Sélection de Grains Nobles 94 Points

  Golden-copper color; Amazing complex nose of apricot, honey, pear juice, tea, marmalade white flowers etc etc. near perfect balance, just enough acid to keep it vibrant, well-integrated RS, not too sweet at all but with effortless power and concentration. Great length. Seems contradictory, but superb with the amazingly light and flavorful chocolate suffle.
