Introduction

A chance to drink Pinots of different stripes with a quacking good meal.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • NV Moutard Père et Fils Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée

    France, Champagne

Yellow, small bubbles not very active. Full bodied, yellow apple, a touch of caramel, dry, some wood.

  • 1993 Robert Ampeau & Fils Volnay 1er Cru Santenots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Light ruby. Fragrant red fruit and green herbs. Light, crisp acidity, some secondary nuances and excellent length. Again, like last year, a very pretty Volnay.

  • 2001 Nicolas Potel Grands-Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Light ruby, maybe even a shade more advanced than the '93 Ampeau. Bigger and more of an oak base than that wine. Pretty regal, fully mature aromas with the typical cooler, spearmint notes of the year. Less distinguished in the mouth-good acidity but lacking intensity and concentration. All in all, good but not quite at the hallowed level of this Flagey Grand Cru.

  • 1999 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Crystal clear, medium ruby not showing any age. Medium weight and showing more obvious wood than either of the 2 Burgundies. Just a hint of the New World cola. First a bit simple, but then displaying both herbs and an espresso richness. Much more complex and interesting than it seemed right out of the bottle.
