Introduction

Thanks to Marc for organizing. I was in Philadelphia for work, but flew in and was able to stop by for a little bit. Tasted through the wines VERY quickly. There were many bottles that I did not taste. Lots of fun!

Flight 1 - Whites (4 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Domaine de la Maladière 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    I liked this a lot. Bright nose of lemons, lime, and fresh florals. The usual plumpness of Les Clos had receded, revealing an edgy, energetic Chablis. Layers of mineral notes, with strong lemon and lime tones. Drinking very well right now...can go longer, too.

  • 2001 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    One of the best Chablis I've ever had. It had everything you could ask for; a lithe but powerful palate, a beautifully complex aroma, and dizzying complexity. Pure salt water, flint, and lemons on the nose with beautiful layers of citrus and mineral on the palate. Exceptional.

  • 1989 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    A really impressive Chassagne. Beautiful, intoxicating aromas of flint, melon, florals, lemons, and salt - reminded me of a tidal pool. The palate was precise and chiseled out of stone with great depth to the citrus and flinty notes. A real treat, and another reminder that White Burgundy is boss.

  • 1978 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Beautiful, elegant, and sexy. Had some waxy lemon tones, a hair of butterscotch, and beautifully textured flint notes on the palate. Showing its age, but in a good way, I was fascinated by this. I haven't gotten the opportunity to drink much white burgundy of this age, so this was great for me.

Flight 2 - Reds (3 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

    Pretty consistent with previous bottles. Lovely, lithe and complex. Beautiful berry tones, with savory mushroom and earth on the palate. Lots of life left with this wine - it has beautiful structure and nice backend acidity.

  • 1993 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Earthy and rustic nose of berries, soil, mushroom, and some beef broth. Nicely resolved palate with smooth, sweet tannins on the finish. Drinking in a really good spot right now...really digging the light berries and dried rose notes.

  • 1964 Philippe Duroche Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    A didn't know this producer, but jeez, he made some fine Bèze! Amazingly rustic nose of mushroom, balsamic, cherry, cranberry and earth. Had some subtle oxidative notes on the nose, but I found them really nice. Its palate was smooth, silky, and refined. Loved its floral, berries, and mushroom tones on the palate. In the perfect spot right now.
