Hartwood Winery Visit

On our anniversary trip, we stopped at Hartwood Winery to taste their wines while on the way to Williamsburg for a long weekend.

• 2006 Hartwood Winery Chardonnay 88 Points

  USA, Virginia

  green apples on the nose and palate, with just the right amount of butter. creamy mouthfeel, long finish.

• NV Hartwood Winery Hartwood Station White 87 Points

  USA, Virginia

  blend of Chardonnay, Viognier, and Rkatsiteli. Clean, crisp, light, airy, refreshing. not special, but plenty nice.

  different. the only rose' I've ever had that featured an earthy flavor profile. There is some light fruit on top of the earthy base. once the surprise is over with, it's actually quite lovely.

  off dry blend of Seyval Blanc and Vidal Blanc. Very neutral. if served ice cold, could be a refreshing crowd pleaser. not my favorite.

  sour, smoky/spice nose seems promising but in the mouth this was unappealing,sour, and harsh. Unclear why they chose to call their 100% cabernet sauvignon wine "Claret" rather than giving it the varietal label.

  From fruit sourced from the Northern Neck of VA. High-pitched "Virginia Thin" nose, some smoke on the back palate, not my favorite.

• 2010 Hartwood Winery Tannat 88 Points

  very expressive. strong drying tannins. Needs time but based on how much it is giving already I think it will be quite nice once the tannins resolve a bit. Drink 2016-2026.

Overall, we enjoyed their white wines much more than the whites.
