Elegance in a Bottle

Introduction

Theme of the night was supposed to be elegance in bottle. Haha but seems that only Jon adhered to the theme with his 1983 Bordeaux.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2005 E. Guigal Condrieu 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

    Yellow gold colour.
Aromatic tropical fruits on the nose. Only slights hints of oak.
On the palate, tasted bananas, pineapples, and as the wine opened up with more air, flavours of roasted nuts became very obvious. Initial tartness on the finish also gave way to a more balanced sweet finish with more air. Nice creamy full-bodied white wine. But not as nice at the 2008 André Perret Condrieu Chery I had before. Drink up now, Condrieus shouldn't be kept for too long.

  • 1983 Château Poujeaux 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Tasted blind. I guessed correctly old left bank Bordeaux! I guessed 1990s, only to be pleasantly surprised that it was my birth year.
Musty old Bordeaux nose which blew off with swirling in the glass. What remained of the nose was quite little though. On the palate, smooth old fruits, kind of like prunes. Tannins still quite apparent but not overly so. Medium finish. Overall a well aged old Bordeaux, but nothing really special or unique to leave a lasting impression.

  • 2005 Alter Ego 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tasted blind. I guessed young Bordeaux Blend but was unsure of the country of origin. Merlot dominant.
Very interesting sweet plummy nose reminiscent of Spanish Rioja.
On the palate, sweet plushy Merlot fruits. Quite high toned and fruit forward. Some spice and peppers also, which confused some friends into thinking that there was Syrah in the mix. Long finish. 90 points now, but will be much better with age.

  • 2006 Mazzi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vigneto Castel 88 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

Tasted blind. Was decanted for about 1.5 hours before tasting.
Sweet syrupy nose. Palate packs a punch, jammy and alcoholic. Raisins and figs. Long finish. I mistook this for an Aussie fruit bomb. Should have known better as the sweet sun-dried raisin flavours on the palate would have given it away. Maybe I was too distracted by the alcohol. This needs many more years to mature. Either that, or 2 days of air in the decanter.

Closing

Nice time catching up with fellow oenophiles over 4 bottles of wine that were tasted blind and provided much fodder for discussion.
