Introduction
Horizontal presented by Richard Brazier. A very pleasant surprise. All the wines apart from one were in prime condition and showing very well. At long last the vintage seems to have come round and most are drinkable now. These are still firm wines with a tannic structure so very much food wines but the fruit has come to the fore now and there is plenty of complexity and depth. They will last and in most cases still improve for many years

Classic brick red colour. Lovely warm cedar and tobacco nose. Plenty of depth. Good entry on palate, mature, tannins a little obtrusive in mid palate but a lovely finish. Lovely balanced Graves and classy.

1995 Clos du Marquis 87 Points

very dark colour little development. Monolithic on nose, a solid slab of blackcurrant cabernet fruit. Rich powerful tannic. Plenty of size but very austere and one dimensional. It may loosen up but others at the tasting who know the wine well said it has always been like that and the tannins will outlast the fruit.

1995 Château Clinet Flawed

This bottle was not right. Not corked but nose medicinal and palate stripped out and metallic. Apart from that appeared over extracted and clumsy.

1995 Château La Fleur-Pétrus 90 Points

deep colour. Rich chocolate nose with a slight feral barnyard element. Vevet smooth on palate again with some barnyard. rich plenty of depth. Intriguing . Good wine but not typical in my limited experience

1995 Château Calon-Ségur 92 Points

deep rich classic claret colour. Lovley rich iron, cedar earthy rustic nose. Lot of complexity. Clear mineral fruit, quite high acidity long finish. In a good spot now.

1995 Château Palmer 93 Points

velvet rich red robe. Rich weave of fruit on nose , very deep and broad. Fine weave of tannin. brilliant on palate, rich deep ripe fruit hint of mint and chocolate but good structure and balance. long finish. Excellent wine

1995 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

Impenetrable Latour like colour. Almost black. Nose very dumb at first but on aeration started to develop a tight weave of black fruits . Rich tannic enormous bredth depth and drive. Long long finish. Although still young it is starting to develop and show real class. Drinkable now with food but much more to come.

1995 Château Lynch-Bages 91 Points

mature classic colour. Nose cedar , tannins and quite high toned fruit. A little green and disjointed. Still very enjoyable but not the drive and intensity of Lynch at its best and suffered in the company of the other wines.

1995 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 93 Points

v deep colour, almost as dark as Las Cases. Lovely fine grained nose, tightly wound fruit. Rich again with fine grained tannins giving lift and balance. Excellent length. A real food wine.

classic mature colour. Nose soared from the glass. Classic PL. Seductive rich balanced. Impeccable balance long perfectly mature but loads of life and drive. Just beautiful lingering sweet fruit finish. voted WOTN by a distance

1995 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 93 Points

deep colour. Big firm tannic. Brooding but not a monster. Plenty of ripe fruit behind. Well balanced on palate but still a way to go before maturity when it will be excllent. All the elements are there but need to harmonise.
