Tasting event consisting of a Kermit Lynch portfolio of small winery low production wines from Italy, accompanied by pasta Bolognese done three ways.
The Valpane Barbera '04 was the wine of the night for me, followed by the Guido Porro Barolo, and then the Il Palazzino Chianti.
2004 Cantine Valpane Barbera del Monferrato Rosso Pietro 92 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato, Barbera del Monferrato
Wine of the night, and would have never guessed Barbera if served blind. This had very much a Chianti Classico profile of sweet fruit intermixed with subtle flowers imbued with toasty oak. Very fine and could hang a couple of m,ore years in a cellar.

2010 Tenuta La Pergola Monferrato 85 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato
This blend of Piedmontese varietals is tannic and extra dy with a medium body and short finish. Better as a second to food, not enjoyable on its own.

2012 Stefano Massone Gavi Vigneto Masera 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Gavi
This is great a pretty bouquet of pears, apricots, and stony chalk. It's a marriage of the Loire and Rhone. The body is light and the finish with crisp acidity. Very enjoyable.

2011 La Viarte Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Grigio 89 Points
Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali
Closed bouquet of minerals and a much better palate of fruit. Finishes crisp and smooth. Ok

2007 Guido Porro Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Classic Barolo bouquet of sweet cherries, licorice, spices and tar that sticks to the glass even after the wine is gone. Medium body with good balance of acidity and tannins. Finishes on the shorter side but a solid effort that leaves you glad you had it in the first place. 91+

2011 Poggio Anima Belial Toscana IGT 87 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Not much going on here. Bouquet and palate are very angular although not harsh. This is a soulless wine begging for some expression.

2009 Podere il Palazzino Chianti Classico 91 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Nicely perfumed Chianti with bright red fruits, fresh cut flowers, and toasted oak. Palate was medium with nice acidity ending light to medium with sweet fruits, toasted oak, and some bitters. Could improve with age.

2012 Arianna Occhipinti SP68 Nero d'Avola e Frappato 89 Points
Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane
Medium to full body with a purple hue and leather aromas. Palate is forward with lush ripe fruit and sweet tannins. Very smooth finish but overall a very plain wine to be enjoyed as a side to food.
