Ed's Italian friend had given him 2 wines to try. So he brought them for us to drink and evaluate.
What an eventful night. Excellent food (with white truffle shaved at the table!). Massive thunderstorm outside. And the black-out at the end.
2005 Baltieri Ripasso della Valpolicella Superiore Monte Paradiso 90 Points
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Ripasso della Valpolicella Superiore
Sommelier at the restaurant recommended to pop and pour instead of decanting. Dark inky colour.
Strong sweet nose of dried berries. Smooth entry. Raisins on the palate. Sweetness to the point of yummy, but still managing to be in control. Quite polished I must say. Long sweet finish.

2007 Roccolo Grassi Valpolicella Superiore 91 Points
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore
Sommelier at the restaurant recommended to pop and pour instead of decanting. Dark ruby colour.
Oak and cherries on the nose. Smooth entry. Lots of berries and cherries on the palate. Gives a sense of a deep complexity on the palate that would reveal itself with more age in the bottle. Nonetheless, very nice to drink already now. The intensity and alcohol is only felt towards the finish, which is long and lingering. Some dry tannins also felt at the finish.
