Visit to Estate Argyros

While on vacation in Santorini, I couldn't help but stop in to visit some of the local wineries. Estate Argyros was kind enough to pour through their current lineup, and it was quite impressive!

• 2012 Argyros Atlantis White

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Light nose of very tart citrus, lemon, and chalk. Clean, full body, with grapefruit and orange peel. Loads of acid, and light tannin on the finish.

• 2012 Argyros Aidani

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Amazingly fragrant. Lots of grapefruit, white flowers, and lemon. Very fresh, lighter in body and finish, but enjoyable. Nice balance.

  Citrus, minerals, chalk, and earth on the nose. Medium-weight filled with citrus and minerals. Mouthwatering acitity, this has good length and finishes cleanly.

• 2012 Argyros Assyrtiko

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  The 'Estate' bottling sees 20% oak (80% stainless), and comes from older estate vines. Nice minerality on the nose, along with some warm spice from the oak. Medium-plus weight, the oak really softens up the body and gives it additional depth. Balanced tannin and acid on the finish. Very good.

• 2011 Argyros Assyrtiko French Oak Fermented

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Vanilla, minerals, and some toast. Nicely balanced, and well-rounded body, the oak adds another layer of depth and complexity. Finishes with fine tannins and good acidity.

• 2010 Argyros Atlantis Red

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Lots of red fruit and spice, blanketed by tannin and big acids. A touch mouth-puckering, this really craves some food.

• 2010 Argyros Mavrotragano

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Mild spice, oak, dark fruit, and some herbal notes. Mid-weight, with firm tannin and acid, but still nicely balanced.

• 2006 Argyros Vinsanto 4 Years Barrel Aged

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Raisin, nuts, and caramel. Yum. Round body, not too sweet, with well-balanced acidity. This is very inviting and enjoyable, though still quite young.

• 1998 Argyros Vinsanto 12 Years Barrel Aged

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Compared to the 4yr barrel aged, this has lost a lot of that baby fat. More smoky and nutty, this shows more nuanced flavors of raisin, dried apricot, and caramel on an exceptionally well-balanced body. Just the right amount of acidity to balance out the sugar. Extremely enjoyable at this stage, and will likely continue to evolve nicely for many more years.

• 1990 Argyros Vinsanto 20 Years Barrel Aged

  Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini

  Even more fragrant and nuanced than the 12yr barrel aged, this shows additional notes of wood spice and roasted nuts/toffee, in addition to the raisin and dried figs. Dark brown, almost caramel colored. Soft, super elegant and concentrated with great acidity. Excellent balance, and overall a superb effort.
