Introduction

I was invited at the last minute to this mega tasting of Wine Spectator Best of from my good friend Patrick. We met a bit before had some food and then spread out upon arrival. I was part of a group of around 10 people, and ended up on my own as I wanted to try Champagnes and Rieslings first. I went right to Salon 1999 and found it was already all gone. There was a VIP hour before and I guess they drank it all. Wasn't happy about that, but saw Krug was there so felt immediately better.

Flight 1 - Champagnes (4 Notes)

This area was really crowded. I almost walked away but was determined to start the evening with Champagne so endured to try 4 of the 10 available.

Flight 2 - Rieslings (13 Notes)

Flight 3 - pinots (7 Notes)

The pinots - my usual go to, became somewhat of an after thought as I briskly moved through this. I've had so many pinots I wanted to leave a focus for the next flight.

Flight 4 - Nebbiolo (9 Notes)

  • 2009 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    extremely tannic, young, tightly wound. I love Vietti so spoke with the Rep there and took my time with the wine. It shows the precise austere fruit that if given a good 10-15 years this wine will become an elegant Barolo.

  • 2006 Elio Grasso Barolo Riserva Rüncot 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    a tannic beast and extremely dry. The tannins overtake the fruit within seconds. The fruit that is there is elegant, complex, lots of cherries, currants, notes of mushrooms, leather and spice. well made.

  • 2009 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 93 Points

    surprisingly approachable and delicious in its youth. dark cherry, dusty tannins - they are very fine - prevalent, but so fine and integrated in its youth. With age, this could be even a more complete wine.

    approachable. fine tannins. some plumminess but so well made that others brighter fruits balance that out. this will age gracefully.

    very tannic and bitterly dry right now. there is some initial fruit - dusty cherries, also menthol and damp earth notes.

    wow. this was good. so complex. I got cooked orange peel with cloves along with red fruits, menthol, leather, dusty cherries even rose petals. Tannins took over at end. very dry. give it a good 15-20 years.

    interesting. I got a lot of chocolate covered dusty cherries with leather notes and then drying tannins. first time trying this producer. very good.

    a tannic beast. very difficult to evaluate for me. some fruit - I think cherries. not sure. menthol, leather, just so dry.

    this was tasty. but found it a bit hollow in the middle. also was tannic and a bit hard to judge. my first rhone of night... it could be me.

    feminine cornas. so pretty. elegant and was refreshing to taste this compared to many big monsters. cherries. herbs, flowers, so nice

    I liked this. It had some sweetness and ripeness but the balance and acidity kept in check. This to me is drinking early. There are tannins but hidden behind fruit will age, but would drink in short to mid term.

    surprisingly open and somewhat easy to evaluate. tannins are quite fine. fruit is higher pictched red fruits. some flowers, some energy and lift at end. very nice indeed.

  • 2010 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    This was a big bruiser of a wine. noticeable tannins, lots of energy, gobs of red fruit along with spices and minerality and touch of leather. This should age nicely and tame down a bit to show all its secondary notes.

  • 2010 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 95 Points

    wow. My red WOTN. Just an incredible amalgam of tastes going on here. lively dark berry fruit, coffee notes, mocha, some citrus peel, some ginger, some mushrooms, What impressed me was that you could taste it for what it was now, but also taste what the future will taste like. The tannins are super fine and so elegant.

    a bit too ripe and worry where this will go. more notes of pruny fruit than energy. drinking well for its profile though right now.

    I found this to be wonderful. and was a joy to introduce this wine to a few fellow wine drinkers who weren't familiar with Musar. This had classic Bordeaux qualities of old, not too ripe, not too heavy just the right amount of balance between leather, fruit and earth. So nice.

    superb. just as good as the southern hemisphere gets. purity of fruit. bright cherry, cherry pits, some spices, energy, lift, finishes gracefully. tannins. this will go for a long time but give early pleasure. so well made.

Closing

Surprisingly I wasn't drunk. Spitting about 75% of the wines was the way to go and not spitting the delicious ones was worth it. This is a fun event, albeit a bit crowded, but if you go at your pace you can taste some wonderful wines. There is something for everyone here and most flock to the big names, so if you are a bit of a wine geek and know what to look for you will be happy. Case in point, Chateau Musar was all but empty when I arrived at the table and the 2005 I had was absolutely wonderful especially since there were no elbows being thrown in my ribs while trying to get a glass. :)
