Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Villa S. Anna Chianti Colli Senesi

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Colli Senesi

This is not ready for drinking. Heavy, tight, and muted were some of the words used to describe it--this after the bottle had been open for more than an hour. Some hints of dark cherries and baking spices manage to poke through an otherwise overwhelming wall of tannins and acid. This needs at least two more years of bottle aging, and probably considerably more. This was the most impenetrable wine of the tasting. NOT RATED.

  • 2009 Villa S. Anna Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Immediately more open on the nose than the Colli Senesi of the same vintage, and a bit darker in the glass, the bouquet shows violets and dusty cherries. The palate is dominated by dark fruit, including cooked plums. Still, there's an all-out attack of acid and tannins that makes the wine difficult to enjoy at this stage of its evolution. There's also a slight bitterness on the finish. I recommend at least two more years of bottle aging. NOT RATED.

  • 2010 Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti) Chianti Classico Le Trame

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Hints of purple in the glass. The bouquet shows sweet cherries and hints of vanilla and damp forest floor. The wine is fresh, but there's a beautiful mustiness to it, too. Even in its youth the wine is showing its southern Chianti terroir. Although the tannins remain too aggressive to enjoy at this moment, the potential is clear. The 14% alcohol should provide sufficient structure for this to even out quite nicely over the next 3-5 years. NOT RATED.

  • 2009 Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti) Chianti Classico Le Trame

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Most tasters chose this as their wine of the flight, and my notes agree. A more expressive floral bouquet than the 2010, this also showed a slight barnyard funk and red fruit just beneath an underbrush quality. Perhaps a little toasted oak, too. In the mouth the tannins are more integrated, although still noticeable, and the wine has plus acid. I felt the finish was dry as sandpaper, but my palate may have been affected by the previous wines. RECOMMENDED.

  • 2008 Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti) Chianti Classico Le Trame

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Easily the most accessible (at present) wine of the flight, the bouquet explodes with red cherries that are dark and almost stewed. There's a floral element, but the fruit is more prominent. The palate is softer and lighter than the 2010 and 2009 vintages, with cherries, raspberries, and hints of black pepper. I'd enjoy drinking this now, but wouldn't expect it to age as well or as long as the 2010 or 2009 vintages. RECOMMENDED.
