Introduction

Hart Davis Hart organized a wonderful tasting of mostly younger Raveneau around their October auction. Despite many being far too young vs full potential and several being slightly reductive, this was a sensational tasting and a rare opportunity to taste a cross-section of vineyards and vintages from one of my favorite producers of white Burgundy.

  • 2005 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Tasting. Ripe orchard fruit aromas just starting to show early hints of the charm of maturity. Bit of Meyer lemon on end with a dense, sweet touch.

  • 2007 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Tasting. Fascinating juxtaposition of ripe, almost tropical fruit with lots of energy and tension that combine for an auster edge. This needs a decade in the cellar.

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    Tasting. slightly reductive to start, so this required 10-15 minutes of aeration. Fat and forward orchard fruit started to emerge on both nose and palate. Hold for another few years, but this will most likely peak well before its 2007 counterpart.

    Tasting. Great aromatic start with alluring floral and spice support for lemon and apple. Slightly less forthcoming on palate, but with the concentration to unfold with more time and air. Very good potential.

    Tasting. Powerful tart apple aromas, similar on palate. Long, powerful, rather crunchy and firm. Also a bit reductive today, better closer to 2020 or later.

  • 1995 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Tasting. Good aromatic start combining apple, pear and earth. Similar flavor profile with good minerality, just slightly mustier than I'd expect on the palate. I'd be drinking these up soon. Varied reactions to this wine, with some tasters enjoying this far more than I did this evening.

  • 2008 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Tasting. Incredibly elegant start with lemon, lemon peel and spring flowers, a bit subdued, with an enticing note of mint. Incredibly density and concentration coming through on palate with head-turning structure. Hold to 2020 or later. My Wine of the Night.

    Tasting. Lots of apple elements with a hint of toasted almond. Slightly tart on palate with a laser-like, pristine and long middle-to-finish.

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Tasting. Incredibly impressive for the vintage, this classically styled Chablis shows lots of mature apple, minerality and subtle mushroom elements. Pops with lots of energy on finish. Very elegant. At its peak.

    Tasting. A very good 2003 with mature apple and lemon, some earth hints, good minerality and a softened, rounded edge. Moderate length and concentration. good now.

  • 2007 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Tasting. Very tightly wound today, not necessarily providing lots of pleasure, but certainly lots of potential. Lemon, green apple, minerality and saline all stand out with knee buckling textures. Not even close to its peak yet.

  • 1999 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Tasting. Lemon and orange peel aromas with some floral and spice hints. Still very fresh flavors, with lemon and some apple in background. Moderate power and concentration. I only tasted from one of the two bottles opened, but was told they were the same. Consistent with other times I've had this wine.

    Tasting. Challenging wine in that it came across to some as backward and brooding, while I found it reductive. Lots of good fruit here, but slightly awkward right now. 93-94 point potential.

    Tasting. Lemon, granny smith apple, lemon zest and spice aromas. Lots of density and superb density. Already beautifully balance, this just needs another 5+ years to soften. Sensational potential.
