121 BC Saturday tasting with 'Italian Wine Importers'

Just rocked up to 121 BC for their Saturday tasting. Giorgio was excited about his hong kong shop and kudos to him for making a go of it. The importers - who I think are just a couple who are doing it as a hobby - though I could be very wrong - were very keen on everything (oh, we tried this at a little trattoria and it was simply sublime etc etc)

• 2010 i Clivi RBL Brut Nature

  Italy, Delle Venezie

  Perfumed peach and other stone fruit, slight metallic note, cream soda. On the palate the wine is spritzy with sligth chalk over stone fruit and cream soda. Meh

• 2011 Umberto Portinari Soave Classico Superiore Ronchetto

  Italy, Veneto, Soave Classico Superiore

  Grapefruit citrus notes over floral and creamy notes that are tending to yoghurt. In the mouth there are stalky flavours with grapefruit that gets more sour with time and is joined by a mid palate phenolic grip

• 2012 Villa Patrizia Maremma Toscana Sciamareti

  Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Maremma Toscana

  Toast initially. Then meaty/chicken notes. Herbs - sage and green fruits. On the palate the wine has medium plus acid, stone fruit them herbs which are joined by tiny green fruit (gooseberry ) notes…the wine is also quite rich and textured. Hmm. Quite intriguing.

  Cherry then cork over cream and vanilla. Bitter with alcohol heat on the finish. FLAW

• 2010 Valdipiatta Rosso di Montepulciano

  Medium minus aromas of meat over slight cherry and woodiness - not unpleasant but quite muted. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acid, bright cherry fruit, chewy but ripe tannin. The finish is a little short and the wine a little simple but alright for what it is.

• 2007 Querce Bettina Rosso di Montalcino

  slightly oxidised cream and vanilla with spice over sweet red cherry notes. In the mouth the wine, again, has spice over cherry. Medium tannins that is fine but slightly astringent and medium acid and body…Actually it's a bit medium everything with a bit of age. Meh.

• 2007 Il Civettaio Montecucco Riserva

  Italy, Tuscany, Montecucco

  leather, cream, perfumed, meaty, muted red berry over cherry that is very slight ripe but with herbaceous notes as well. Juicy, quite warm, savoury, slight red berry fruit and spicy notes, structured, fine talc textured tannins…long finish, reasonably complex, well balanced and nice. in a good place now but with the ability to age a little longer.

• 2007 Valdipiatta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

  initial impressions of coffee and burnt toast which dissipates to leather and cold meats underpinned by slight red berry and cherry over a metallic note and touches of tobacco leaf. On the palate there are flavours of slightly sour red fruit and tobacco which are more prevalent here than on the nose. the wine is with time savoury and meaty with medium plus fine textured tannic grip. Serious. needs time. Okay.

The villa patrizia sciamareti was just plain odd. most weird. And the il civettaio montecucco riserva was, for me, the pick of the reds.
