Introduction
Thanks to my wife who understands and appreciates my passion for wine, I once again was able to participate in the World Wine Symposium 2013 in beautiful lake como.
Flight 1 - Roberto's office (3 Notes)
Kelly and I took the same flight from Frankfurt to Milan. We grabbed a taxi and arrived at Robert’s office. He is a fellow Grand Jury Europeen member and a major importer of French wines to Italy. He served us delicious mortadella and focaccia and a bottle of the 11 Drouhin montmains. A couple hours later, he shared a couple bottles of nice Champagnes.
Flight 2 - Restaurant Enrico Bartolini (10 Notes)
We then drove to hotel Devero which is situated in the outskirts of Milan and had the pleasure of dining at the restaurant of Enrico Bartolini whom just the day before received the second Michelin star. Roberto, Orazio and Christian, Italian members of Grand Juery Europeen arrange the wonderful BYOB dinner. Chef Enrico is a great young chef whose dishes are very imaginative yet firmly rooted in traditional regional cooking. Once again, he prepared a memorable tasting menu that went incredibly well with the wines that we brought.

Recent purchase from Christies. Based on the cellar content and appearance , at least 30+ years old. The color is very light, almost like a young wine. The nose reminds me Dom without bubble, also waxy chenin a la Coulée-de-Serrant. A bit austere, mineral, cool, saline and lime zest. Dense, quite dry, mineral and piercing acidity in the palate. Very unique expression, linear and quite enjoyable.

1983 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 89 Points

Seems a bit too advanced. Notice madeira note. Sweet, burnt sugar, tarte tatin, copper and the ending madeira note. With air, it gets fresher but a hint of oxidative note remains. The CT notes seem to indicate that this may be correct. Slightly lacking concentration and advanced impression.

This wine reminded me the importance of ideal cellaring. Very fresh, a hint of petrol, sweet yellow fruits, lemon, a hint of mint and lemon oil. Oily palate, bright acidity and a hint of alcohol as the end note which is not bothersome. This is a wine where slow aging resulted additional complexity. All components are working together resulting in a very complete wine. Delicious and lovely. Perhaps this is a wine to seek at auction.

Started a bit reductive but nicely opened up. Sweet yellow fruits and good mineral expression. Sweet ripe palate impression and bright acidity. It still remains fresh but don’t see any further improvement. Drinking nicely but not terribly complex.

A typical ripe fruit expression of the 90. Slightly stewed fruits, dark fruit expression and a hint of Asian spices. Excellent concentration and sweet fruits. IMO, the wine needs additional cellaring to come together, need a bit more tertiary notes to hopefully compensate the ripe fruit expression.

1988 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 96 Points

Kelly and Orazio who are drink a lot of Sassicaia informed me that this is the second best wine of the 80s after the 85 and this didn’t disappoint. Beautifully matured yet remains fresh, lovely complex red fruits, a hint of licorice, rose, tar, lead pencil and flowers. Medium concentration, silky palate, good acidity and nicely integrated tannins. This is at its peak, not a big wine but showing beautiful harmony and complexity. Very enjoyable and another wine to seek at auction.

1967 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Speciale Flawed

My birth year wine that Kelly generously brought. Unfortunately there was a strong pine resin smell as well as VA that masked the beautiful sweet red fruits. The palate was sweet yet the pine resin note continued. I can definitely see this wine being great if correct.

Starts slight reductive but opens up beautifully. Beautiful roasted red fruits, a hint of cherry, raspberry, mushroom, caramel and earth. This is not a big impressive wine but very elegant and tasty a la Rousseau. All the components have come together beautifully. Perfectly delicious, a kind of wine that you can drink a whole bottle.

Served double blind, immediately guessed Gevrey-Chambertin but not a great crus as noticeable earthiness was present. Guessed the 09 but was the 10, also though Mortet. A solid village wine that is already enjoyable.

En magnum off the restaurant list. A beautiful fresh bottle. Beautiful yellow fruits, bake spices, brioche, white pepper and lemon oil. Very fresh mouthfeel, sweet fruits and excellent concentration. All in nice harmony. Drinking beautifully. Much better than the last magnum.

For me, one of the big reasons for participating in WWS is the opportunity to taste some great wines by the participating producers.

Very MSD, big, earthy and chunky. Red fruits, ripe blackberries, dark spices, lavender, mushroom and earth. Excellent concentration, sweet ripe fruit expression and good acidity. A bit tight and need at least ten more years for all the components to come together.

IMO, some of the 07s lack concentration/mid palate. Delicate and elegant but very harmonious. Lovely blue fruits, a hint of smoke and flowers. Drinking beautifully already. Very pretty wine.

Big and serious wine that needs time. Ripe blackberries, mushroom and earth. Excellent concentration and still noticeable tannins. Much bigger scale and definitely more material than the 07 Mazoyeres but I prefer the 07 for the current drinking. Need at least five to ten more years. I would not open now.

Showing a bit of damp cellar which I get from most of the 83s. Fully matured, sweet red fruits, raspberry, sous bois and earth. Lovely wine. The producer thought the wine was a bit off but I thought just the vintage characteristic.

Dusty note which I associate with young Il Caberlot, floral, red and black fruits, blackberries, and exotic spices. Medium concentration, seamless silky palate and lovely finish. More approachable and prettier wine than the 09. Already enjoyable and uniquely Il Caberlot.

This is a big serious wine. Although quite ripe, it remains fresh. Black fruits, licorice, earth, allspices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, silky palate and noticeable but not obtrusive tannins. Lovely wine that will require at least five more years of cellaring.

Fully matured, soft and warm. Red fruits, dry cherries, signature Il Caberlot exotic spices, caramel and a hint of sous bois. Very burgundian mouthfeel. Lovely elegant wine. No need to wait.

65% roussanne 30% Grenache blanc and 5% marsanne. Fresh white peach, honey, spicy and limestone. Distinctive cool climate impression. Very nice wine that will well complement seafood dishes.

Mostly Grenache, licorice, ripe black fruit, sweet spices and iron. Excellent concentration, ripe black fruits, mineral, silky, bright acidity and nicely integrated tannins. Despite the ripe fruits, the acidity keeps the wine fresh and gives very cool overall impression.

Flight 4 - First Dinner at Villa D'Este - Nov 7th (8 Notes)
This was a semi BYOB dinner. The usual suspects, three Italian and one French members of Grand Jury European, Kelly and I were joined by Antonio and Bettina, mother of Moritz and the owner of Il Carnasciale. It is always fund to hang out with Antonio and we had a blast.

If you like a classic big napa cult cap, this is it. Expressive black fruits, dusty, ink, licorice, coconut and sweet dark spices. Incredible concentration and silky palate. This is a big scale in your face cab but with an excellent balance.

En Magnum. This is the first time trying this after the tasting at the winery. I still find the wine a bit too ripe. Dry red fruits, dry cherries, raisin, medium caramel and earth. Excellent concentration, warm and round palate impression. Perhaps need time and my guess is it will gain a bit of balsamic note. If so, my rating would become at least a couple points higher. Others in our table liked this more than me.

Came directly from the winery. Fully matured, dry dark fruits, strong tobacco note, licorice and earth. Warm and round palate impression, very ripe fruit expression and fully integrated tannins. A bit more advanced than the 82 Bordeaux counterparts, perhaps the similar stage as the 82 La lagune in development. A very food friendly at this stage.

This is a ripe yet restrained style. Ripe red fruits, dry cherries, caramel, tar and sweet spices. Excellent concentration, quite polished, sweet tannins and long finish. Although a big scale wine, seamless and harmonious. I get the impression that Robert’s wines are more restrained. This is a classic wine, grand vin.

Ripe and dry, subtle dry red fruits, rose, raisin and baking spices. Lovely silky palate and a hint of dry tannins. This evolved a lot with air. Drinking nicely but noticeable structure to last. I get the impression that this is a traditional style Barolo. Ripe yet not over powering and nicely balanced. I believe others liked it even more than me.

It isn’t often that I get to drink the 07 La Serra back to back. I get the cooler impression yet they are almost identical. Dry red fruits, rose, tar and flowers. Quite precise palate impression, silky and nicely integrated tannins. Lovely.

Somehow I wrote, Falletto red, barbaresco but confirmed that it was the 04 Rocche del Falletto. Seems a bit shut. Decadent red fruits, strawberry and raspberry and sap. Silky yet airy palate, seems precise but can’t tell how concentrated the wine is. Noticeable structure but sweet tannins. Elegant, precise yet noticeably structured.

Ripe yellow fruits, peach, lychee, caramel but no petrol yet. Not too Gewurztraminerish which is a good thing for me. Unctuous palate, jammy yellow fruits, apricot jam and bright acidity counterbalances and keep excellent precision.

Wine made by a good friend, Abi Duhr, in Luxembourg. Ripe, intense sweet yellow fruits, also red fruits and very mineral. Extreme minerality and mouth puckering acidity give very dry impression despite residual sugar.

A fellow GJE member Otto Geisel from Germany was having a bottle of Champagne with his lovely wife. He is one of the pioneers of slow food movement in Europe. He kindly order the bottle and shared with Kelly and I.

The dinner was a relatively low key. There were a number of bottles but only one wine truly shined and it was brought by Antonio.

Surprisingly the best showing surpassing the 85 and the 90. Fully matured and mostly tertiary and shy yet vibrant expression. Shy red fruits, red cherry, dry cherry, caramel and sous bois dominating. Quite enjoyable.

I wrote down as the 09 but corrected as the 08. This is a liquid sex. Cool black fruits, licorice, blackberries and sweet spices. Incredible silky palate, very Burgundian, cool sweet fruit impression, nicely integrated tannins and seamless lovely long finish. I must drank three glasses of this. Wow wine for me. I highly highly recommend.

Flight 9 - Late night soiree - Nov 8th (8 Notes)
Late night soiree
I stopped by at Villa Chima to pick up my tasting notebook. Laurent generously shared four Egon Muller wines that he saved from the early formal tasting. This lead to a major drinking and eating session that lasted more than three hours.
1959 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 97 Points

Directly from the personal cellar of Egon Muller. Incredibly fresh, lovely light lemon color. Lemon curd, a hint of yellow peach, flint, lanoline and honey. Not unlike Le Montrachet or Chevalier, the flavor is intense yet the palate is airy. The texture must be tasted to be believed. The only minor complain is the slight lack of acidity compare to the 66 and the 71. Nevertheless the wine remains precise. An incredible drinking experience.

Directly from the personal cellar of Egon Muller. Another Incredibly fresh bottle with lovely light lemon color. The nose is similar to the 59 and the 71 Scharzhofberger Auslese but more intense. Another wine with incredible texture and purity. All the components are in harmony and the wine has a singular expression. This wine flirts with perfection.

Directly from the personal cellar of Egon Muller. Another Incredibly fresh bottle with lovely light lemon color. I noticed two tasting notes on CT that seem to indicate more advanced bottles. The fruit once again is yellow, incredibly fresh, lemon, no hint of apricot or riper fruits. This demonstrates the perfect interplay of sweet fruits, acidity and minerality. This wine has higher acidity which leads to greater overall balance. For me, one of the best white wines of my life.

This is the only bottle that displays noticeable petrol note. Not as concentrated and showing more riper yellow fruits. Exceptional balance and delicious. A bit unfair to be served next to the 59 and 71 Auslese.

Two bottles in one night. Very Krug once again. Sweet yellow fruits, apple peal, brioche, a hint of smoke and lovely burnt sugar note. Very forward and delicious. The vintage Krug to enjoy while cellaring the 96.

Intense yellow color. Perfectly ripe yellow fruits, light caramel, cracker jack, honey and mineral. Unctuous yet airy palate and intense sweet fruits. Like many of the 92s, lacking acidity. This is a big ripe style of Montrachet that is towards to the end of the plateau.

Incredibly fresh and mineral. White flowers, lanoline, truffle, white button mushroom, white pepper and wet stone. Exceptional concentration yet precise, incredible mineral expression, bright acidity and long finish. A great example of Clos Ste. Hune. This is a complete wine.

Incredibly expressive nose of blackberries, crèmes de cassis, wild flowers, black pepper, tapenade and fatty rare steak. Excellent concentration, silky palate, bright acidity and fully integrated tannins. Drinking beautifully. This is a hedonistic wine at its best.

A pleasant surprise, no sign of oxidation, very fresh. Lemon, lemon zest, strong mineral notes, flint and a hint of caramel coming from oak which I find in the Lafon wines. Oily but precise and linear palate, mineral, sweet fruits, bright acidity and long finish. A great example of how wonderful matured Lafon Meursault can be if not premoxed.

A small pour with some sediment. Nevertheless, this is a classic Pauillac, lead pencil, cassis, black fruits, floral, a hint of tobacco and earth. Dark sweet fruits, silky palate, cool overall impression and nicely integrated tannins. Not as big and hedonistic as the 90 but expressive nose and more classic. This is a lovely claret that is at the first stage of maturity.

Fully matured and displaying all classic Monfortino signatures. Mostly dry red fruits, also plum, strong presence of iron, rose, tar, caramel, rare steak, leather and ending balsamic note. Sweet and sour palate, iron, balsamico, rust and noticeable but nicely integrated tannins. I found the wine old school, slightly chunky and rustic. Nevertheless beautiful fully matured Monfortino.

Flight 11 - The Gala Dinner - Nov 9th (11 Notes)
The gala dinner. The usual suspects but Enzo Vizzari, Director of "Le Guide dell' Espresso” decided to join us. He was incredibly generous and brought the 92 Ramonet Le Montrachet, 83 Henri Jayer NSG Meurgers and the 85 Sassicaia. This was a great way to end the fifth edition of WWS.

Delicate and precise nose displaying; a hint of petrol, lemon, pear, apple, honey, lanoline, white flowers, saline and limestone. Quite precise palate, fresh cool fruit impression, lovely mineral expression, bright acidity and seamless finish. Lovely precision. I can drink this all night.

This bottle came from Enzo Vizzari’s, Director of "Le Guide dell' Espresso", personal cellar. The color is so pale, it is hard to believe that this is twenty year old wine. Incredibly fresh yellow fruits, lemon, lemon curd, a hint of flint, noticeable smoke, smoked oyster, oyster shell, honey and a hint of sweet spices. The palate displays the typical 92 unctuousness, also beautiful mineral expression, beautifully layered fruits and surprisingly display of bright acidity. Although quite sweet and ripe, very fresh in lieu of the vintage. Marvelous wine with a long life ahead. I would have love to drink this with a friend or two.

Expressive blue and black fruits, as usual mocha and roasted fruits. This is quite ripe, warm and soft. Although quite expressive and show generous fruits, I think medium concentration. Showing the typical vintage characters, the mid palate is slightly hollow and no follow through. Nevertheless this is a flamboyant wine that is drinking beautifully, a crowd pleaser.

Laurent opened this to compare with the 07 Claude Dugat. I am always amazed that how Madame creates such a strong Leroy signature. Ripe black fruits, black berry jam, stewed berries, a hint of caramel, nutmeg, sesame and stem. Good concentration, generous jammy fruit expression and nicely integrated tannins. Here once again, I found the vintage trait, slightly missing mid palate. Drinking beautifully right now.

I didn’t expect a Henri Jayer but there it is. Another bottle that came from Enzo Vizzari’s, Director of "Le Guide dell' Espresso", personal cellar. Truly sous bois, dry cherries, a hint of raspberry, light caramel and soy. Although still intact, need to be consume as it is a bit tired. Great privilege but this would have shown better ten years ago.

Came from the domaine’s cellar. Extremely fresh nose, dark cherries, sweet spices, leather and strong earthy note. Excellent concentration. I personally find the wine a bit monolithic. This particular bottle needs at least ten more years.

Except in a few cases, IMO Monfortino reaches the pinnacle at 30-40 years. Beautiful old lady, dry cherries, iron, blood, sweet caramel, anise, tar and rose. Fully matured, delicate palate with a hint of oxidative note at the end. Quite good but this bottle has seen better days.

Another bottle that came from Enzo Vizzari’s, Director of "Le Guide dell' Espresso", personal cellar. He truly has been generous. This wine always amazes me with the concentration and freshness. Kind of one hit wonder as although the 88 is excellent, this is so much younger and more concentrated. Blue fruits, blueberry jam, cassis, a hint of licorice, lead pencil and flowers. Incredible concentration, fresh fruit expression, mineral, nicely integrated tannins and long finish. Incredible wine that seem to be very consistent.

For me, the 11 Chablis are too green, showing too much pyrazine. This was no exception. Somewhat lean, noticeably green and lacking energy. It was a pleasant wine that went well with mortadella and focaccia.

According to Roberto, released 20+ years ago. This shows the clear reason to cellar Krug NV. Beautiful golden color. Sweet rip yellow fruit profile, apricot, a hint of peach, honey, orange peel, a hint of brioche and mineral. Sweet palate, bright acidity that leads to lovely long finish. Shy yet fine mousse. This is fully matured but absolutely without any oxidative note. Beautifully fresh and light yet quite intense. Stunning showing, perhaps the best example of this wine for me.

More developed than I would have expected which is not a bad thing. Quite golden and fully matured. Round, warm, light caramel and sweet yellow fruits. Very ripe, slightly lacking acidity which makes this very approachable. Very enjoyable but don’t anticipate any further improvement.
