Ciacci Piccolomini Tasting

Owner and winemaker, Paolo Bianchini, came out to show us his wines. Not to be a suck-up or anything, but I liked every wine. The variety of wines and theme of elegance that showed throughout the lineup was very impressive.

• 2010 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Toscana IGT

  Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

  Dull garnet; ripe, plummy, soft and silky, darker berry on the palate; balanced and tasty though simple; very good QPR.

• 2009 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Sangiovese Montecucco

  Italy, Tuscany, Montecucco

  85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 5% Syrah; 25% barrique; very dark garnet; menthol, cedar, ash, red fruit, raspberry; rounded, good acid, full, darker cherry, raspberry, very elegant frame, some tannin and more structure; try this if you like a more modern Brunello- it costs a half to a third as much.

• 2010 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Rosso di Montalcino

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino

  Darker core with reddish orange rim; perfumed and sweet, sour cherry, sandy, orange oil, needs to breathe; good structure, classic Sangiovese, old-school taste, slight bitterness on the finish but not displeasing; I'd like to see this in a couple years.

• 2007 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Dark carmine with lighter rim; sweet floral, red fruit, licorice, round; fresh, good structure, red and dark berry, tobacco, hard sweet red fruit echoes on the long finish.

• 2006 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Santa Caterina D'Oro Vigna di Pianrosso

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

  Very dark crimson with lighter thin rim; perfumed, floral and sweet, cedar, orange oil, nobility; very tannic and hard, well built, in need of more time, more reminiscent of a Barolo at this stage, give this time as the '04 is amazing right now.

• 2010 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Sant' Antimo Fabius

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Sant' Antimo

  Opaque purple with ruby purple rim; purple fruit, violets, new oak- some American, toasty, cocoa, coconut, vanilla; plummy, sweet, purple fruit, soft, underpinned by tobacco and pen ink; I'd like to see this with a couple more years.

• 2010 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Ateo

  Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Sant' Antimo

  Dark reddish purple with light purple rim; sweet red fruit, currant, licorice, almost black pepper, green pepper; structured, good fruit, larger scaled but elegant, long finish; delicious.
