A Privileged Colgin Tasting

Introduction
I was extremely fortunate to be able to join a rare Colgin tasting, led by the estate's GM. The pours were generous, but the setting did not afford my taking proper notes. I nevertheless thought I should memorialize and share my quick observations from this special, memorable evening. We started off with my first 2012 exposure to Liquid Farm, a nice coincidence as I am a big fan of that upcoming label, then moved onto the main event.

2012 Liquid Farm Chardonnay White Hill 92 Points
USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
My first taste of the 2012, and I was very impressed: great minerality complementing the restrained, crisp citrus and other fruit aspects. Really well balanced.

2006 Colgin IX Estate 98 Points

An impressive powerhouse, more balanced than the 2010 (unsurprisingly), and starting to settle into a primary drinking zone. Dark berries and a soft vanilla underneath. Shows a bit of heat, and will benefit from several more years.

2007 Colgin IX Estate 96 Points

Another powerhouse Colgin, but in a bit of a weird place as it has a raisiny aspect that should dissipate with time. Explosive berries and dark fruit, with silky tannins and a killer finish.

2010 Colgin IX Estate 99 Points

Now this is the bees knees IMO, and the most impressive wine I've ever had. Utterly opaque in color, with some anise, cedar and tar notes complementing the rich fruit. Even at this early age, the intoxicating bouquet and rich, layered fruit pulled me spiraling into the glass like that occasional dream where I'm falling and falling for so long I stop worrying about when I will land... and never do. Transcendent and beautiful.

2005 Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard 95 Points

The highly perfumed nose gives way to a delicious, medium bodied wine featuring some floral notes, crushed gravel and sweet tannins. Drinking at peak, but surely no rush here.

2005 Colgin Cariad 98 Points

A real standout, even though a few years too soon to be considered at its peak. Tremendous complexity and concentration, with layers of dark fruits, crushed rock, anise and mocha along with some floral aspects. Full-bodied with plentiful, sweet tannins and a fine acidity that seemingly demands food. The longest finish of the 2005's.
