Berlin tasting

Introduction

Had a tasting inspired by Berlin tasting of 2004. Chile vs Bordeaux.
Wines were poured in the following order:

1. 1997 Seña
2. 1990 Château Phélan Ségur
3. 2009 Château Capet-Guillier
4. 2008 Concha y Toro Carménère Terrunyo Peumo Vineyard Block 27
5. 2005 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor (Private Reserve)
6. 2000 Château Malescot St. Exupéry
7. 2010 Château Phélan Ségur
8. 2008 Seña

No 6,7,8 were decanted for 1.5h.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 1997 Seña 90 Points

    Chile, Aconcagua Valley

    Bright, ruby colour, clear rim, some sediment.
    Light oak and vanilla on the nose, pepper, green paprica, blackberries, honeycomb wax, spices.
    Good structure, lovely acidity, blackberries on the palate. Quite fresh. Some mineral graphite notes develop, also cedar aromas grow with time.
    Lovely. (B+)

  • 1990 Château Phélan Ségur 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Brick red.
    Nose starts with barnyard and develops into old timber and decaying/rotting trea aromas, may be acorn - but it is not unpleasant, rather - interesting. Very few fruit/berry aromas but there is also leather. Wine is quite integrated, nothing particularly stands out here. Taste is long and silky. Develops with time, so enjoy it over a coule of hours at least. (B)

  • 2009 Château Capet-Guillier 81 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Bright purple, dark and dense colour.
    Strong vanilla, blach cherries, prunes. On the palate dark berries, vanilla, oak, tannic, a prominent mocha note, cloves. This didn't stand out between the rest of the wines, rather disappointing showing.

  • 2008 Concha y Toro Carménère Terrunyo Peumo Vineyard Block 27 80 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Cachapoal Valley

    Very pronounced blackcurrant nose and palate. Foam from a blackcurrant jam, when you boil it. Super enjoyable, but also very simple and monotone. Tannins can be felt, as well as rather high alcohol, but it is pleasant overall. If not the high price, I would recommend this wine to beginners and people who don't enjoy wine, as this is super fruity and easy to understand. Can't see how I might buy another bottle of this myself. (C+)
    PS. Some said that there were some cork taint aromas, but I didn't smell it.

  • 2005 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor 93 Points

    Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto

    Dark and intense colour.
    Nose not very strong, some black mountain ash (aronia).
    Taste is very intense - chocolate, olive oil, figs, soft vanilla, multilayered, developing and very interesting. Long finish. Superb wine. WOTN (A-)

  • 2000 Château Malescot St. Exupéry 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Barnyard that disappears with time and very soft vanilla on the nose.
    On the palate - leather, light wooden taste, dark sour berries. Interesting, deep, complex and elegant. Some ocean saltiness, licorice, black cherries. A really good, mature, complex Bordeaux. (A-)

  • 2010 Château Phélan Ségur 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Pleasant nose of vanilla, blueberries, green plum, dark berries, good acidity, very strong tannins at this point. Nose is promising, but taste doesn't deliver yet. (B-)

  • 2008 Seña 90 Points

    Chile, Aconcagua Valley

    Very strong blackcurrant on the nose, also some ocean/fresh air (ozone?) aromas. Good acidity, blackcurrant leaves, dark chocolate, saturated. Good. (B+)

This is the final judgement by the group of 9. Place, (sum of places). I personally put 2000 Malescot as 2nd.
