Trying to find value in 2010 Burgundy

Last night our tasting group met to try and find some 2010 Burgs worth cellaring that won't break the bank. The wines ranged in price from $20 to $55. All wines were served bling and consumed over the course of about 2 hours. Breads and cheese were served as well. Overall, I thought the wines showed well. There were many that I think will be able to be laid down for a decade or more and improve. It was great that Ray threw in an 03. I wonder how many people would have thought how well and slowly a village wine from that hot vintage would age.

• 2010 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Bourgogne Blanc Les Grands Champs 89 Points

  France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

  A very pleasant Burg. Golden in color. The nose has some vanilla and lemon curds. Tart on the attack but flattens out thru the mid palate and finish. Green apples turning to lemon curd. Very smooth. For $20, a nice value. Drink now.

• 2010 Domaine Pierre Gelin Gevrey-Chambertin Clos de Meixvelle 87 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

  This was a divisive wine. Seemed to be at the top or bottom of everyone's list. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is slightly earthy with some cherry powder. Nose is better than the palate for me. Tart cherry cough drops on the palate. A liqueur finish. Its a nice wine but for $55, I would like more. It did get 2 1st place votes though. More of an AFWE wine.

• 2010 Forey Père et Fils Morey-Saint-Denis 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis

  Ruby/purple in color. The nose seems to have some VA but with air it shows dusty with cherries. Lovely texture. Velvety. Slight tannins. Dark cherries. Nothing wrong with this wine, and a lot of very good things. For $45, this should age a bit and develop.

• 2010 Mongeard-Mugneret Bourgogne 89 Points

  France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

  Ruby in color. The nose has cherries and a light root beer note. Nice texture. Seems to have some depth and complexity waiting to evolve. Turns acidic on the finish. At $20, this was the least expensive wine and really a nice Pinot for that price. I would wait a couple of years and then drink.

• 2010 Domaine Lamy-Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean Rouge 88 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

  Ruby/purple in color. The nose is tight then opens to a cherry liqueur note. Nice texture although plenty of tannins. Dark cherry fruit. A 1er Cru for $38 is rare. This looks like it could show some nice development over five to ten years.

• 2010 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

  Very nice showing for this wine. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is tight. With air, an earthy quality comes out along with nice fresh cherries. There is a nice complexity here as it unwinds in the glass. Firm tannins. At around $50, this is worth laying down for 5 to 10 years and letting it develop.

• 2003 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 91 Points

  Ray thru this in. All we knew was there was an older wine in the bunch that was the same wine as one of the other blind wines. It turned out to be right next to each other. Of course, 03 is an interesting vintage. This was the groups WOTN. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is cherries and dark cherries. A bit more layered and complex but still a lot of fruit. I thought perhaps it was a 2005. Slightly drying on the finish. Really in a nice place if not mature yet. A good statement on 03, Jadot and village wines.

• 2010 Jérôme Chezeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges 90 Points

  I liked this far more than the group who had this last. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is nice, slightly earthy with cherries. Cherry candy on the palate with a liqueur finish. With air it mellowed out and there was even a bit of merde in the nose.

• 2010 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Vosne-Romanée Alliance des Terroirs 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

  Virtually tied as WOTN for the group as well. Light ruby in color. The nose is dusty with cherries and a bit of spice. Tart cherries on the palate. Some depth. Long finish. Pretty wine.
