Introduction

Early evening Christmas supper with Michael from my WSET Diploma.

Flight 1 - With Canape and Entree (2 Notes)

Michael pulled out a 2005 1er Cru Puligny for the entree but this proved to be quite oxidised (much to our disappointment) so we stuck with the whites for entree as well

Canapes - hock toasty, cheese crackers
Entree - chicken terrine, melba toast

  • 2012 Sébastien Christophe Chablis

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

Medium minus aromas of stone fruit, floral top notes and slight muskiness. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acidity and flavours of tart green apples. Quintessential chablis from a lousy vintage.

  • 2011 Weingut Knoll Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Loibner

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

Cheesy, funky, mineral (wet stone/struck flint), some grapefruit and sulphur. In the mouth quite tart grapefruit, slight minerality....the fruit goes floral over time and is joined by a little white pepper spice. Nice

Flight 2 - With main (2 Notes)

Main course was Lamb with puy lentils and roast potatoes.

  • 2004 Château Sénéjac

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Brambly, black fruit, autumn leaves, bit of farmyard funk and leather, long, beautifully balanced. Lovely with lamb chops and puy lentils. Glorious, joyous.

  • 2003 Domaine Tempier Bandol

    France, Provence, Bandol

Spice and confected, almost candied, red berry fruit with a slightly dusty quality. In the mouth red berry, fine tannins, medium plus juicy acidity with a bit of spice on the finish...still very young.

Closing

We finished upstairs with a 15 year old spring bank and a SMWS Caol Ila (yum yum yum).

A lovely evening, with plentiful conversation, great wine and excellent food. Michael preferred the Tempier but I find it so hard to go past that Senejac - it does everything I want from a mature Bordeaux, it's not going to set the world on fire but I'd happily drink that every time lamb chops are to be consumed.
