Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2002 Delamotte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Millésimé

    France, Champagne

Fine persistent bubbles, greenish straw color; some oak, luxurious, biscuit in check, green apple, sweet and tart; taut, a little disjointed, tart green apple, good richness but not as much as the nose suggests; should have given some more air.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark core with brownish red rim; stewed fruit, ripe red fruit almost figgy, sweet baking spice; seaweed, crunchy red fruit, lavender, open and ready, graham cracker, hot stone finish.

  • 2005 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Purple ruby; cranberry, sour cherry, pomegranate, tar- almost reductive and youthful, some funk; seems youthful on the palate too, taut but not the NSG tannin I expected, dark and sour cherry, under ripe blueberry, stemminess; good but needs time; not quite the nobility that I got from the '09.

  • 2007 Domaine Olivier Hillaire Châteauneuf-du-Pape Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very thick and rich but unfortunately corked.

  • 2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark core with dark crimson rim; dark raspberry, fig, sweet, a little brooding, floral; some cherry, seems to have some plushness from a component done in oak?, some Grenache bitterness, rich but I like the drinkability; was thinking Mordoree, but I am happy this was Beaucastel, a very strong showing with lots of upside potential.

  • 2000 Château Monbousquet

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Almost black core with thin brownish red rim; Bordeaux kind of funk, cedar, tobacco, mint and menthol, a little green pepper; sweet richness, pencil shavings, tannic and drying; a little closed and not as open as a previous bottle.

  • 1989 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Dark core with bricking; red currant, eucalyptus, smoky, mesquite, and cedar; a little lean and mean and not really showing the stuffing some other wines from this vintage exhibit, very true aged Left Bank; good.

  • 2001 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva Classico

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Cloudy brownish crimson; sandalwood, softer dark cherry, menthol, tar; some orange, soy, softer and more delicate at this stage, sour cherry lingers; good not great.

  • 2000 Tenuta Pianpolvere Barolo Riserva Bussia

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark core with dull crimson rim; raw meat and spices, chestnut, dark cherry fruit, tar; ultra fine tannin, dry but not drying, rich and luxurious, darker fruit transitioning to redder fruit, modern style, seems younger; reminded me of Fantino Conterno; the best bottle of this I've had yet and I found it very tasty.
