Introduction

We opened with 2011 Tenuta Sant'Antonio Corvina Scaia Veneto IGT, 2000 Arnaldo-Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano and 2010 Booker Vineyard White before we got to the Syrah/Shiraz.

  • 2008 Qupé Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

    Very grapey on the nose with assertive black pepper, soft fruits and mild tannins. This shows a little heat on the finish but overall a very pleasant bottle. It isn't complicated but worth trying another.

  • 2005 Pax Syrah Obsidian Vineyard

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

    Graphite, sweet tobacco, lilac talcum with a little green, herbal stemmy amaro taste. This wine has integrated well with a great punch of pepper on the attack and a long complex finish. A beautiful wine.

  • 2005 Schild Estate Shiraz

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Slightly grapey but mostly blackberry jam with some grape jam. Then there is alcohol heat followed by a little raspberry jam. The acidity on the finish is unpleasant although it does make it easier to swallow the jam. No more for me thank you.

  • 2007 Betz Family Syrah La Côte Patriarche

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

    Smoky creosote overwhelms the dark fruits. A little sweet caramel tries to balance the green bitter quality on the finish. This may integrate into a pleasing wine but it is just confused right now.

  • 2009 Lillian Winery Syrah

    USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

    Slow ox for about ten hours.
    Beautiful blend of dark red and black fruits with silky tannins, a little toasty caramel and exotic spices. There is a whiff of tobacco and nicely balanced black pepper on the finish rather than the attack. Amazingly balanced for such a young Lillian. WOTD? First bottle empty!
