Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2012 von Winning Forster Kirchenstück Riesling Großes Gewächs 93 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

This is incredibly young, but already quite compelling and hinting it'll turn into something quite special with time. At first it shows an incredibly vivid mineral presence; dusty rock quarry aromatics and a palate that feels crystalline with saline and stony notes carried by the bright acids of the vintage. With more air and time the fruit emerges, fresh grapefruit and citrus flavours with riper tropical accents, but even as it warms a little it retains its sense of focus and razor sharp precision. Stunning length and balance.

  • 2001 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny 92 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

Nothing new to add to my prior impressions of this. It's drinking beautifully and coming across fully mature with the tannins fully resolved, a gentle, polished texture, and layers of red fruits and greener herbal/forestal elements accented by developed leathery and other savoury notes.

  • 2007 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

At first this is somewhat aromatically reticent, but with a little air (and vigorous swirling) it really opens out to show that classic Allemand fragrance of violets, black pepper, olives and more savoury meaty and gamey notes. It's still rather youthful and primary in terms of its flavours, but it has the textural polish and finesse of a more mature wine with very fine grained tannins and bright acids, and it's incredibly rewarding to drink now, as young as it is.

  • 2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 95 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Three years after I last had this, the fruit remains incredibly youthful and fresh, but it's now starting to show a little development with some smoky and petrol notes intermingling with the fresh Mosel fruit, florality and slatey accents. This has the intensity and power of Auslese, but a phenomenal acid spine that keeps it very vibrant, light and racy with great cut and focus. The balance is incredible and this is an amazing wine. I'm looking forward to revisiting this in several years, if I can keep my hands off my other bottles. (AP 25-02.)
