Pre-Christmas Dinner with Friends

Introduction

Same story as last year...a group of friends (all of them wine-nuts) who regularily meet for lunch have a nice get-together with a bunch of special bottles.

Occasion: Pre-Chrstmas get together....

Flight 1 - With the appetizer: Foie Gras Variations (1 Note)

  • 1921 Château Caillou Sauternes 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    On the label it reads Grand Reserve 1921, which my friend JR, a Sauternes lover, mentioned is the Créme de Tète of the Caillou.

    Tasted blind: Light amber in colour. Nose of bitter almonds and reminds also of Calvados. Nice sweetness, black tea, honey. All very balanced, elegant yet powerful. Now at its peak but I would not be surprised to see well stored bottles lasting another 20-50 years.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1979 Château Margaux Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Tasted blind: The nose had a very faint TCA note, so I do not want to give a rating. Underneath this slight error, this wine showed flavors of leather and berries. The tannins were very well integrated, herbal notes (Riccola drops), covered with mature berry notes. Overall very pleasant and I would expect good bottles to be in the 92 pts range and last for antoher 10 years.

    Luckily I have one more bottle in my cellar to retaste in the next few years.

  • 1990 Château Margaux 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Tasted blind: Deep garnet in color. Nose of leather, mint and currant. The tannins are still present but well integrated into the rich and elegant sweetness. The wine is powerful, long yet so balanced. No hurry to drink this beauty. Just wonderful!

  • 1979 Château Cheval Blanc 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Tasted blind: Very light, quite mature and translucent in color. Nose of mint, honey and raspberry. The wine was light yet elegant with distinct flavors of ripe berries. The wine is lacking muscles and power but is able to offset this deficiency with its elegance, complexity and balance. The tannins are very smooth and harmonize well with the overall sweetness. Now at its peak. I have expected a wine out of a good vintage of the 50s or 60s.

  • 1986 Penfolds Grange 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia

    Tasted blind: Very dark in colour. Nose of black licorice, black berries, tar and currant. The wine is smooth as silk yet very powerful and distinct. It knows and clearly shows that it is not a light weight. The balance is amazing and the fruit is very well integrated. Long, complex, powerful...what a beatuy. No hurry to drink!

  • 1983 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasted blind: light in color. Nose of leather and barn. Wine is very blanced, powerful yet elegant. It is not a typical blockbuster Latour but one that is able to please with its subtle sweetness and complexity. The only thing I 'complain' about this wine is the present acidity. Drink now for the next 10 years.
