Introduction

Dinner at Otto Ristorante followed by wine at home while watching "The Other Boleyn Girl'.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2011 Castello di Querceto / Querceto Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Consistent with my tasting at the Castello few months ago while in Tuscany. Fresh fruity Tuscan nose. Bright raspberries and puckery tannins on the palate. Much better with food than sipping. With more air, sour cherries finally appeared. Average Chianti Classico, I have had much better.

  • 2010 Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Il Vino dal Tralcetto

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Lots of earth and wood on the nose. On the palate, deep sweet earthiness. Lots of dark fruits. Surprisingly smooth tannins. Slight earthy bitter finish. Quite sweet and nice, but maybe a bit too much of the earthiness which might put some people off.

  • 1999 Borgeot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Very mouldy cork under the foil. Cork came out intact. Initial whiff of mushrooms and earth. Not a very pleasant funkiness. Fine sediments in the wine. Lots of spice on the palate. Funk blew off after about an hour in the decanter. Floral scents and perfume started to appear on the nose. Tea leaves, woody stems, and spice continued on the palate. An intense deep bittersweet finish, with leathery tannins felt.

Closing

Reasonable and average Tuscan wines by the glass at Otto. Have had better Volnays than this one.
