Paul's house then to Adam's

Paul emailed the usual suspects on Friday evening to organize an impromptu casual gathering. I was a "maybe" until Saturday afternoon. I got there a bit late and only had an hour and half to rush through the wines. There was a bottle of the 08 Mugnier les amoureuses I didn’t get to taste. No notes were taken and all are from memory.
A nice spread of cheeses and charcuteries. All the wines showed really well.
We ordered a couple greasy pizzas that really hit the spot. At the end, I requested Justin to serve us a wine blind. It was quite good, and thought it was a cali pinot. Justin confidently proclaimed that if any of us correctly guessed the wine, he would gift a bottle of the 95 La Tache. Oh well. He served us a New Jersey wine made with 100% montepulciano grape. I had no idea that montepulciano is a grape varietal.
It was a fun night with a few unexpected great wines.
2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Intense fresh sweet red fruits, raspberry, sweet spices, cola and mineral. Excellent concentration, sweet dense red fruit palate impression, silky and nicely integrated tannins. The 01s seem are showing really well at the moment. One thing I noticed is that although the nose is intense and ripe, the finish tends to clip a bit, ie not as long as the nose suggest. Nevertheless, this is a pretty wine that is still very youthful.

2007 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 97 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Justin mentioned how wonder this bottle was a few weeks ago and kindly brought one. This is absolutely singing. Gorgeous red and black fruits, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry, sweet spices, cola, caramel, sap and earth. Excellent concentration, hedonistic, pure and harmonious intense fruit driven palate impression, silky palate and sweet tannins. Just drinking so incredibly well for such a young wine. For me, most of the 07s lack the middle palate and tend to have short finishes but not here. Not need to dig deep/ponder as the wine is simply stunning. Wow!

1966 Domaine Thomas Freres Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Ripe red fruits, dry fruits, sour cherry, raspberry jam, plum, dry cherry and earth. There is a hint of oxidative note. Good concentration and sweet dry red fruit palate impression. A bit bitter finish that clips. This would have shown a lot better from a full bottle. Got a better with air.

1994 Château Lafite Rothschild 95 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
It has been awhile since I had a FG from the 94 vintage. Intoxicating nose of red and blue fruits, cassis, plum, graphite, coffee, a hint of bell pepper/vegetal that adds complexity and earth. Medium concentration, youthful sweet fruit palate impression, silky palate, a bit of green and nicely integrated tannins. The palate is quite soft and round so a bit of confusion compare to the nose. Upper 90’s nose and lower 90s palate. A classic lafite and a classic claret. Very much nose driven wine. Drinking beautifully but no need to hurry.

Really, we should keep it as a secret. Another brilliant showing. Incredible nose and even more incredible palate. One of the sexiest Bordeaux.
