Introduction

This month's theme was 1999 Red Burgundy, tasted alongside a 1991 DRC Romanee St Vivant. All wines except the DRC and white were tasted blind.

Flight 1 - DRC (1 Note)

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

    Varnish and a bit of barnyard initially, though it eventually blew off. Some VA. Nice, light and elegant body, full of light cherry and quite velvety. Exceptionally long finish. Very well integrated. A really nice wine.

  • 1999 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Tasted blind. Dark, subdued nose. A bit green. Light bodied, with drying tannins. It did open up a little with air; maybe it just needs more time?

  • 1999 Maison Leroy Bourgogne 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

    Tasted blind. Black cherry and earth dominate the nose. Rich, fruity body with some light tannins. Acid driven finish. Nicely balanced.

  • 1999 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas Flawed

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Tasted blind. Seems to be a bit prematurely oxidized on the nose. Rich, powerful body with some elegance. 87 -- but marking as flawed given the oxidation.

  • 1999 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Belles Soeurs Yamhill County Cuvée 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Yamhill County

    Tasted blind. Nose of dark cherry and violets. Surprisingly full bodied, with more darker fruits and some pine/menthol. Big and tight tannins, with a long finish.

  • 1999 Bonneau du Martray Corton 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Tasted blind. A touch musty on the nose, but rich and balanced on the body. Very generous, though not a lot of depth. Finishes with fine tannin and good acid, if a touch tart.

  • 1999 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

    Tasted blind. Very tight. Light to medium body, but quite robust and powerful with a nice backbone of acid. Dry tannins on the finish. Seemed to oxidize quickly once opened.

  • 1999 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

    Tasted blind. Rich red fruit mingles with wood spice on the nose. Dense on the body, and very well balanced with great acidity and tannin structure.

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Tasted blind. Funky, earthy nose, but quite elegant and balanced body.

  • 1999 Jacques Cacheux & Fils Echezeaux 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Tasted blind. Initially quite barnyard-y. Ripe red fruits come out on the body, which is dense and powerful--a bit more modern in style. Fine tannin, with a light, quick finish and some minerality (limestone).

A nice white to cleanse the palate and finish off an enjoyable evening.
