BBQ for friends - Dominus, Mt. Horrocks

Introduction

A couple of great friends popped over today for a North Carolina barbeque with all the trimmings so I thought I might open a couple of wines of interest. The Mt. Horricks was drunk with the food and its fully mature and elegant style matched better that I could have hoped for. After the masses of food were consumed I thought we should try a fully mature Dominus and it showed in spectacular fashion - certainly first growth quality, in my view....

  • 1999 Mount Horrocks Shiraz Mount Horrocks 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

    A lovely showing for this last bottle in the cellar. Refined and fully mature with a beautifully well judged and modulated texture and balance. Earthy with herbal notes - subtle American oak, lush and mature shiraz flavors. Well rounded and smokey with a refreshing acid lift on the lingering finish. Outstanding wine.

  • 1990 Dominus Estate 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Simply great wine, drinking in full maturity. A dead ringer for grand cru St. Emillion from an excellent vintage. Ripe Damson plums, cigar box, gorgeous pencil shaving, and leather. There is a a distinct horsey brett aspect to the wine that might turn some tasters of, but for me it did not overwhelm the wine and simply added to the complexity. Great texture, perfect balance. This is class. No need to hold any longer but I am hopeful this will hold at this special level for a few years yet. Next one in 2015 and then reassess.
