Introduction
I spent the day touring vineyards and tasting wine with Emmanuel Cazes and a bunch of other wine writers from the U.S. and Canada. My first winery visit in the Languedoc-Roussillon, and it was great. The area around Rivesaltes is gorgeous, rustic, and packed with gnarly old vines. I'll probably post more about the event soon, but here are some notes from the Cazes wines I tasted.
2013 Domaine Cazes Le Canon du Marechal Rosé 85 Points
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes
Green pepper and strawberry on the nose. Tangy and spicy on the palate, with wild strawberry fruit and green herbs. Simple, fresh, fun, great salad wine. Syrah, Merlot and Grenache.

2013 Domaine Cazes Le Canon du Marechal 85 Points
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes Catalanes
Beaujolais-like in its freshness (this wine undergoes some carbonic maceration) with easy-sipping approach, cherries and some earth undertones. Half Merlot, half Syrah.

2012 Domaine Cazes Côtes du Roussillon Marie Gabrielle 87 Points

Grippy, dark plums, violets, brick and campfire. A hearty, earthy, Syrah-based blend.

Plummy, cherry-driven with roses and mixed spices, open and rich, very nice. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

2010 Domaine Cazes Muscat de Rivesaltes 85 Points

Peachy, honeyed aromas. Waxy-sweet on the palate, with flavors of lychee, honey, yellow flowers. Not very deep, but rich and fun.

2000 Domaine Cazes Rivesaltes Ambré 87 Points

A Grenache Gris, aged 7 years in open wood casks. Almond, lychee and apricot on the nose. Sherried on the palate with flavors of macadamia nut, caramel and toasted almond. Not too crazy sweet, great with cheese, showing some good complexity.

2011 Domaine Cazes Rivesaltes Grenat 86 Points

A tasty Grenache Noir dessert wine. Aromas of red fruits, mashed berries and roses. Creamy, rich and full on the palate, with strawberry jam, rose petals, earth, subtle caramel. Sweet, but not sticky.

2005 Domaine Cazes Rivesaltes Tuilé 88 Points

Nutty, honeyed, oxidized notes on the nose. Apricot, light roast coffee and figs on the palate, some orange marmalade. Not overdone, this is a fun oxidative-style wine. With so many mediocre sweet wines from this region, this one is impressive.

1978 Domaine Cazes Rivesaltes Cuvée Aimé Cazes 91 Points

Light orange colored. Smells like a Highland Scotch, with lots of flowers and caramel, but not harsh at all. Some smoke, apricot and coffee on the nose as well. On the palate, this is fresh, nutty, slightly herbal, with elements of Cognac, hazelnut and honey. Reserved sweetness, lots of complexity and a very long finish. Gorgeous stuff, years away from full maturity.
