Introduction

for Robert Alfert's Viva España charity thread on WineBerserkers.

We even threw in a fizzy white for extra credit.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Avinyó Penedès Petillant vi d'agulla

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

Fizzy bubbles and sharp Cava-like acidity--what's not to like? Refreshing with peppery crackers and Australian cheddar while the charcoal flames and the potatoes boil. This one could be fun on a lte spring afternoon with some local shrimp.

  • 2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Slow ox for about 6 hours. Upon opening I am struck by wintergreen and vanilla, cedary oak. There seems to be dark fruit to balance. 6 hours later the fruits are tangy and red (some plum) with mild tannins. The oak is not too intrusive but still more than I like on Tempranillo. I like the acidity quite a lot but find this wine rather one dimensional with very little of the orange, clove spice and cigar I like on Rioja.

  • 2004 Mas Doix Priorat Salanques

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Huge cooked black fruit flavors over a base of strong tannins which are just beginning to integrate. I would like more acidity to cut through a grilled ribeye but a nice bottle nevertheless. This also shows a nervy, spice mid-palate but the finish fall a little short. Pleasant enough.
