Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2012 Celler Credo Penedès Miranius

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

My first exposure to Celler Credo, which is a project of the Cava producer Recaredo. This is 50% Xarello, 47% Macabeu, and 3% Chardonnay. Aromas of lemon zest and chalk. In the mouth, this has good balance and surprising acidity given the low 11% alcohol. Fairly light in body, but you hardly feel cheated when drinking this: the finish is quite long. I imagine it would go well with a variety of light appetizers. Rated 0 on a scale of -1 to 3.

  • 2011 Celler Credo Xarello Aloers

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

Compared with the Miranius, this is a much weightier wine, with far more "stuff" in the glass. A funky/barnyard overtone overwhelms at first but quickly integrates with the rest of the bouquet. A citrus aroma is present, but it's more lemon curd than lemon zest. In terms of minerality, this is more crushed rocks than chalk. Fuller bodied in the mouth--the extended lees contact (two months) really shows here. Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.

  • 2007 Recaredo Cava Brut Nature Gran Reserva

    Spain, Cava

Crisp green apples, lemons, and slight vanilla tones waft from the glass. Bone dry in the mouth with persistent minerality and acidity. Very well balanced; this Cava could give almost any entry-level Champagne a run for its money (many of the higher-end ones, too). The perlage seemed flatter than the last time I tasted this, but that may have been because this bottle had been open for some time. Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.

  • 2004 Recaredo Cava Brut de Brut Gran Reserva Brut Nature Finca Serral del Vell

    Spain, Cava

Richer, fuller, and altogether better than the 2007 Brut Nature. There's considerably more depth to this Cava, presumably from the older vines and the greater use of oak. Intensely mineral--some tasters thought too much so, but I loved it. The bouquet doesn't show the same sweet intensity (i.e., no crisp apples here), but the mature citrus and fine crushed rocks are beautiful. Excellent perlage. Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.
