    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Mid straw. Initially quite grippy and youthful, opening up a little to a richer, but still quite lime-fruited wine with good shape. Showing well. ****

  • 2010 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay 89 Points

    South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

    Mid to full straw. Quite ripe. Plush and quite rich with some mineral spine, but a little too round and comfortable. Lacks some edge. ***

  • 2002 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Lavières 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

    Beautiful bright ruby. Classic nose, dark red fruit, a touch of something autumnal and a pinch of spice. As with previous bottle, this shows it's Vosne proximity and punches a little above its village lieu-dit weight. Tasty. Bare ****

  • 2007 Torii Mor Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Select 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

    Deeper in colour than the Grivot alongside. A little deeper and darker without losing it's elegance. A lovely wine. Maybe just lacking a bit of complexity and follow through on the finish, but showing better than when first tasted eighteen months ago. ***1/2

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

    Lovely. Traditional minor right banker with nice structure and flavour that belies its relatively humble status. Consistent with three bottles just over a year ago. In a lovely place now but no hurry. ***1/2

  • 2001 Vergelegen Cabernet Sauvignon 88 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

    Quite a deep dark ruby. Blackcurrant and blackcurrant leaf nose. Quite firm and a little astringent. A little surly even. Curious, as two bottles from this case were showing really well about eight months ago. Not sure - most of it went back in to the fridge, so will evaluate again later. No better than *** on this showing (**** on previous showing).

  • 2005 Domaine Alary Cairanne La Jean de Verde 83 Points

    Yikes this is hefty. Even after a double decant of a few hours (and indeed then after being open for two weeks) this is a tannic brute. Clearly a wannabe Chateauneuf, this is big and extracted and quite burly, but the tannins are very obvious and dry and I'm not sure the masses of fruit will cover them over the duration. Really not my cup of tea. Hopefully this will calm down, but it's not showing signs yet. The remaining bottles could be destined for a casserole. ** at best.

  • 2005 Domaine de la Mordorée Lirac Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac

    Another wannabe Chateauneuf with obvious ambition. Though extracted and massive, this is merely a big wine and appears to have balance (unlike the Alary alongside it). Hefty Chateauneuf style that requires big hearty food even after a good double decant. A few more years in the cellar I think. One to revisit if and when it calms down, but probably a solid ***

    Bright light cherry red. Vibrantly translucent. A nice floral quality to the nose. Good bite, structure built on acidity. Relatively light and floaty through the mid-palate with a sense of depth in the background. Very decent indeed. ***

  • 2001 Silvano Bolmida Barolo Bussia 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Far paler than the 11 Prod Neb alongside it. Mid to full garnet. Nicely fragrant, floral and spicy. Good acidity, bright red fruit. A lighter, floral style but none the worse for that. Moreish. ***

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Blind. Deep purple. Lots of crunchy blue black fruit here in a creamy, fairly low acidity package balanced by a little tannin. Blind I took this as a high altitude Malbec, though with extended aeration the merlot character does come through. Well made in a modern commercial style. ***

  • 2003 Dr. Loosen Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Palest straw. Initially this is quite tight and fresh and seems a bit simplistic in its sweetness and balancing acidity. Revisited a day or two later this is a different wine. It's opened up to show far more fruit definition in its sweetness, more complexity and good cut on the balanced finish. No obvious signs of 2003 - plenty of acidity and freshness. Now with a decant, but plenty of time in hand. ***1/2

  • 2000 Grof Degenfeld Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 90 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

    A nicely honied, slightly barley-sugared richness. 6putts sweetness with good balancing acidity made this ideal with a nut tart. Good but not top flight. ***1/2

  • 2005 Mas Amiel Maury Vintage 88 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Maury

    Does pretty much as you'd expect, and a lovely match with a salted chocolate tart. Quite vibrant, bright, dark red fruit, some sweetness and some structure through the finish. This shows more vibrancy than some (previous vintages) other bottles I've had. Utilitarian with the chocolate, but a pleasant vin de meditation too. ***
