3 - 2009 Napa Cabs

Introduction

Over this past weekend, we opened up three 2009 Napa Cabs, one on each night but saving some for the next night. All three were outstanding wines. Of course, these are all $60 and up, so that should be expected. I can't see these represented any kind of QPR or value, but that is hard to find in Napa Cabs. Still, these did deliver the goods.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Alpha Omega Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Drank over two nights. Purple in color, some ruby at the rim. On opening, the nose is deep with cassis, black raspberries, cedar and cigar box. Big texture. With a bit of air, the wine rounds out with plenty of depth. The cedar is persistent, but there is plenty of fruit to balance it. On day 2, the fruit turns from black to red. The acidity is a bit more pronounced. Still quite good, but I preferred it on Day1 with an hour or so of air. Medium tannins. I would drink these over the next couple of years.

  • 2009 Hayfork Cabernet Sauvignon Lewelling Ranch 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

    Drank over two days. On opening, this is dark purple. The nose has cassis, black raspberries, smoke, and a slight earthiness. Great lush texture. On the palate, much deeper and took some time to open. On Day 2, this is better with black fruits leading the way. Lovely texture. Starting to show some nice complexity. Long finish. No hurry here.

  • 2009 Kapcsándy Family Winery Endre 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

    Dark purple in color, a bit flat. The nose is nice, more like Bordeaux. Cassis, dust, cigar, a bit of funk. Might be some Brett, but its very light if so. Complex. Nice texture. This took about an hour to open up. The palate matches the nose. Slightly drying tannins on the finish. An excellent wine though it drinks more "French" than Californian.
