Introduction

Pulled a bottle from my wine fridge at work to cap off a meeting. First of three flawed bottles that I pulled in a row -- all from different producers/regions, and all of which had siblings that showed extremely well over the past year or so. Pretty surreal/baffling. Granted, there were no spring chickens in the bunch, but they were all well stored, and again, tasting fresh recently. Mercifully, the third bottle -- 07 Bookwalter Protagonist -- came around and was drinkable.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Gran Clos Priorat Gran Clos Flawed

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

    Purple streaks from top to bottom of the cork -- bad sign. Smelling funky, but nothing too offensive. Tastes reminiscent of past bottles, and very promising, but wet newspaper takes over after a few seconds. Clearly flawed, and what a shame, as the last bottle tasted ~a year ago was truly outstanding and still in its prime.

  • 2007 Breggo Cellars Pinot Noir Flawed

    USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

    Just trashed. Ammonia on the nose and pungent acidity and earth on the palate. Way far gone. Another crying shame, as the last bottle tasted ~six months ago was certainly mature, but in that great way that Anderson pinot can get after a few years; i.e. polished, mellow, and dusty. No huge shock though, as an 06 of the same wine tasted about a year ago also fell off the cliff unexpectedly. Safe to say that the Breggo appellation pinots from this era shouldn't be held too dearly.

  • 2007 J. Bookwalter Protagonist Flawed

    Definitely an off-showing, but not so badly flawed as to be undrinkable. Strong fertilizer aromas for the first 10-15 minutes, and I'm talking old fashioned organic fertilizer. Pretty gross. Was tasting chunky and dirty for about the same time period, but the fruit eventually did emerge and gradually take over. Ended up being pleasant -- even very good -- towards the end of the bottle, but nowhere near the levels of prior bottles tasted.
