Moscato d'Asti face-off

Introduction

Who says Moscatos can't be taken seriously? Tasted both these excellent Moscato d'Astis side by side. Added a "Mediterranean Moscato" which I got from gift hamper, to be used as a control. However, it was so GHASTLY tasting (everyone agreed) that it promptly went down the sink.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 G.D. Vajra Moscato d'Asti 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti

    Light straw yellow colour. Fresh white flowers on the nose, more expressive than the Vietti Moscato d'Asti. A bit more fizzy than the Vietti also. Honeyed pear on the palate, with lemon lime towards the finish. Very refreshing mouth-feel. Overall slightly more enjoyable than the Vietti. This is more of a "party-party" Moscato, the Vietti is more of a "chill-out" Moscato.

  • 2012 Vietti Moscato d'Asti 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti

    Slightly darker yellow than the Vajra Moscato d'Asti. Muted nose. On the palate, elegant chrysanthemum flowers and pear flavours. Refined 'smooove' mouth-feel with honey aftertaste. Sweetness could be almost cloying. This is more of a "chill-out" Moscato, while the Vajra is more of a "party-party" Moscato.

Closing

2 different, both good. Vajra just slightly edging out the Vietti. Vajra being the cheaper of the 2, is definitely more value for money.
