Great once again. A classic, pure Kabinett that's all about lightness and cut, with fresh citrus, pear and herbal flavours accented with the start of developing savouriness. Fantastic.
The fruit here's rather ripe, veering towards the tropical end of the spectrum with some pineapple notes among fresh citrus and pear flavours, but there's also incredible purity and finesse to the flavours, a vivid stony mineral base beneath and a bright acid spine keeping it very bright and precise. It's dry but never austere, and there's a very polished, graceful palate presence. Fantastic GG.
Not as open and flamboyant aromatically as the Fruhlingsplatzchen GG, but there's plenty of ripe fruit and minerality on the palate here. It feels a touch heavy handed in contrast though, coming across rather ripe and powerful without the acid cut that the '08 Fruhlingsplatzchen showed.
A wow from the fragrance alone. So complex, layered and absolutely compelling to sit down with; layers of honey, lemon cream, flowers, more savoury smoky and burnished elements all coming together around a core of orchard fruit flavours that are still remarkably fresh. It's at the point of maturity where the taste echoes the aromatics perfectly, and the sweetness, flavours, and structure all come together seamlessly on the palate. A spectacular wine, thanks Bob.
Not a fan of this at all. Overly austere, harsh and sour, with a distracting phenolic/vinyl character dominating the fruit, and a bitter alcoholic finish.
A delicate, graceful, fully mature Kabinett. Very savoury with barely any sense of sweetness and developed smoky and lemon cream flavours framing the understated citrus and pear fruit. Really elegant and polished. Thanks Darryl.
Equal parts fruit and stone. This is fantastic; fully mature and incredibly complex with citrus and stone fruit flavours that are still quite fresh, a vivid stony base and more savoury developed elements all coming together seamlessly on the nose and palate. There's great intensity on the palate, but also fantastic cut and lightness, and a finish that keeps resonating long after each sip. Fantastic.
Not too different from my last experience with this wine. A real knockout with so many layers of fruit, spice, minerality, smoke and other developed flavours all coming together seamlessly in a powerful yet graceful package with great length and balance. Thanks David.
Riesling with the voltage turned way up. Incredibly fresh Meyer lemon, lime and guava fruit on the palate tinged by spice, slate and faint developing creamy elements, and there's really powerful acidity beneath that keeps this razor sharp and really precise. It has the sweetness and intensity of Auslese, but all the lightness and freshness of a classic Kabinett, and a glass disappears all too quickly.
All about precision and focus. There's that classic mature Grünhaus aroma of high toned herbal and forestal green elements, tart green apple and citrus fruit beneath, and a bracing acid spine that keeps it really racy and light. It's dry without ever seeming austere, and I love the balance and freshness here.
Liked this a lot more than the Halenberg GG, Frank says this has a touch more residual sugar and it comes across halbtrocken on the palate with a bit more elegance and roundness. Bright citrus, apple and red fruited flavours tinged with higher toned floral notes, finishing long and slightly savoury.
A classic Mosel Kabinett; fresh apple and lemon fruit framed by gentle floral notes, slate and a touch of that Prüm sponti/sulfury funk, all conveyed with remarkable lightness and purity of flavour.
A fantastic mature Spätlese. Powerful, ripe and flamboyant with a bright floral character (Bob says hibiscus), savoury honeyed, burnished, vanilla cream and smoky notes, and a core of Mosel fruit that's still very fresh and lively with bright acid beneath. There's incredible persistence on the finish, and this is a real knockout - thanks Seth!
Delicious, and coming across fully mature. A scent of vanilla cream and savoury earthy and smoky earthy notes leading into a palate of fresh peach and pear fruit and stony minerality with very little perceptible sweetness. Powerful yet very elegant, finishing long and smoky.
A classic Rheingau powerhouse; packed with peaches and riper tropical fruits tinged with honey, spice and faint caramelized notes. The '76 botrytis certainly shows here, but it's very well balanced and fresh with powerful acidity beneath, and an incredibly long finish.
The fruit here still feels incredibly fresh and youthful, but there's just a touch of developing savouriness and creaminess apparent on the nose. Bright acids keep it quite lively, but while it's a very enjoyable Spätlese, for me it doesn't quite show the sheer lightness and elegance of the Felsenberg.
Drinking really well now. The aromatics are more floral than on the '02 Kupfergrube with some savoury maturing notes starting to show around the fresh apple, pear and stone fruit flavours, and there's a remarkable sense of lightness and textural polish that makes this really easy to drink. Fantastic.
Absolutely incredible wine. The palate is a real fireworks display - incredibly complex with layers of fresh fruit, baked apples, honey, bright florality and more savoury mature elements, all coming together seamlessly and conveyed with such purity and elegance. There's still a little lingering sweetness, and powerful acidity beneath that keeps it really light on its feet with a finish that resonates long after each sip. Wow.
Really lovely; a classical, graceful Kabinett that's all about understated citrus, apple and lime flavours tinged by mature lemon cream and pine needle notes. Barely sweet and very light on its feet with bright acids, and really refreshing to drink in between the bigger Auslese and dessert wines.
Outrageous. This is hard to put into words. A whirlwind of ripe tropical fruits, Meyer lemons, honey, high toned spicy and herbal notes, and a level of depth, balance and persistence that I can't really convey. It's an incredible high wire act of sweetness, intensity and acidity, impeccably balanced with a finish that would need an hourglass to measure.
This is rather tightly wound at first and needs a bit of air to open out. At first the nose is rather restrained, but with time it becomes more floral and herbal, while combining sweet citrus and pear fruit on the palate with savoury smoky and lemon cream notes. Very elegant with a lightweight palate presence and bright acids.
A classic mature Doctor; savoury, graceful, refined and showing incredible complexity with an array of mature fruit, honey, smoke and sweeter herbal and creamy flavours on the nose and palate. There's just a faint trace of sweetness here, bright acids beneath still keeping it very fresh, and this is fantastic to drink.
More Grünhaus goodness. This is still quite youthful; the developing pine needle and other forestal/herbal notes I find in older Grünhaus are there, but rather understated in the background with an array of ripe orchard fruits, slate and sweeter floral and honeyed notes in the foreground. Bright acids give it great clarity and precision, and it's all too easy to drink. 93.
Oh, wow. This drinks like Auslese, it's quite ripe, flamboyant and sweet with a spectrum of fruit ranging from classic pear and citrus notes to more tropical pineapple and melon flavours. Beneath the fruit is a vivid stony and saline mineral base, with powerful acidity cutting through the sweetness and giving it an incredibly racy and vibrant palate presence. Stunning Riesling.
From magnum! (Are there many things more awesome than mags of old Grünhaus Auslese?) There's that classic Grünhaus aroma; pine needles, herbs, a bright herbal-forestal green overlay to the fresh Riesling fruit, and sweeter floral and honeyed notes all coming together, and remarkable lightness and finesse on the palate. A real stunner. Thanks Gene.
There's a lot of botrytis evident here with ripe honeyed and apricot scents, but there's also plenty of that signature Würzgarten strawberry and lime fruit beneath the botrytised notes. It's still quite youthful, intensely sweet on the palate with powerful acidity beneath keeping it very racy and lively, and this still seems to have a fair bit of time ahead of it.
My last bottle of this. Fantastic and incredibly youthful once again, a powerhouse of ripe pineapples and other tropical fruits dusted with honey, caramel and exotic high toned spicy notes. Intensely sweet yet carried by fantastic acidity, finishing very long. One of the best post-Schwarz wines I've had from Catoir.
Similar to my last experience with this (but a larger pour, this coming from a 750 rather than a half bottle) with immense ripeness; ripe tropical fruits, honey, caramel and sweet baking spices accented by maturing smoky and burnished flavours. It's a powerhouse on the palate, intensely sweet but very well balanced by its acidity, and still gives the impression that it has years ahead of it.
Fantastic. So complex, with an array of spicy, honeyed, floral, smoky and sweet tropical fruited flavours coming together seamlessly on the nose and palate, and incredible balance of sweetness and acidity. Beerenauslese in ripeness for certain, but it carries itself with the finesse and elegance of a great Spätlese.
Packed with botrytis; honey, caramel, dried apricot and spicy notes around a core of ripe tropical and citrus fruits. Just like the Muller Eiswein, it's immense and concentrated while very well balanced with powerful acidity, but less spicy/high toned with a great deal of botrytis instead. This is an incredible wine experience and a real treat to taste - thanks Paul.
So immensely concentrated, intense and powerful; high toned, spicy and herbal accents around a core of ripe apricot, pineapple and sweet citrus fruits. The sweetness and acidity here both go up to 11, but the balance remains impeccable with a remarkable sense of purity to the fruit and absurd length.
Absolutely monumental. What a treat to taste this again. So complex and layered, with layers of caramel, spices, honey, brighter floral notes and a spectrum of fruit ranging from the ripe and tropical to more savoury baked peaches and apples. It's incredibly sweet, yet so elegant, precise and graceful with powerful acidity beneath, and a level of intensity and length that exhausts superlatives. A strange, rather oxidative nose, and very disjointed and unbalanced on the palate. I don't think this was a sound bottle.
