Flight 1 - Foradori (4 Notes)

The white was somewhat of a revelation and the reds interesting and pure.

  • 2012 Foradori Manzoni Bianco Fontanasanta

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Medium yellow. Slightly aromatic. Medium body, smooth feel. Tropical fruit and citrus, minimal residual sugar, pungent finish with some bitters. Fascinating and really good for current drinking.

  • 2011 Foradori

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Deep ruby almost to rim. Anise nose. Very smooth, lush entry, deep blackberry fruit, a touch of inner mouth florality. Long yet lively and pungent, good grip at the back end with substantial grainy tannins. Interesting and very much like a northern Rhone Syrah.

  • 2011 Foradori Teroldego Morei Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Incredible opaque purple. Earthy tones. Big wine with black fruit leavened by high acidity and clay on the finish along with soft tannins. Not forbidding but definitely could use more time.

  • 2010 Foradori Granato

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Not quite as inky as the other 2 reds. Closed aromatically. Tight and more backward. Noticeable wood base, sweeter black fruit, smokiness and slightly astringent wood tannins. A baby and much to admire, but the oak detracted a bit compared to the purity of the first 2 Teroldegos.

Flight 2 - Montesecondo (4 Notes)

I loved the fact that these wines also had very little in the way of make up. The Cabernet/Petit Verdot blend was good enough to overcome my general antipathy toward Bordeaux style wines.

  • 2011 Montesecondo Rosso Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Light ruby color. Light cherry aromatics. Light to medium weight. Fluid and supple. Nice interplay of red fruits and pine needles. Easygoing, forward, no tannin to speak of. Enjoyable quaffer.

  • 2011 Montesecondo TÏN Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Deeper ruby than the Rosso. Lower pitched black cherry nose. More texture than the previous wine with a lovely (and lively) tart bite and good soil and minerality on the slightly puckery finish. Very good and even better with a few years to round out.

  • 2010 Montesecondo Chianti Classico

Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

Out of magnum. Medium ruby with faded rim. Complex mix of red fruits and herbs on the nose. Light but good sappiness, ever so slight amount of wood. Delicious subtle fruit (ripe but not sweet), great embedded acidity, good length and not much remaining tannin with an excellent sense of terroir at the end. Marvelous now and over the next 5 years, I'd imagine.

  • 2011 Montesecondo Il Rospo Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Shockingly deep colored compared to the Sangiovese-based wines before it. Strong mint tones. Medium weight with intense, ripe, sweet blackcurrant fruit, round, ripe tannins, and excellent length. It seems somewhere between a Bordeaux and a New World Cabernet. Suffice it to say that it is terrific now but will certainly improve.

Closing

An exciting and consistent array of wines from these 2 estates. Grazie mille to these producers for their generosity and graciousness in showing the wines and fielding questions about them. Bravo!
