  • 2002 Robert Stemmler Pinot Noir Carneros 86 Points

    USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

    Green leafy nose with strawberry and petroleum. Also a distinctive burnt toast. The fruits or classical violet did not come through at all. The finish was classic Pinot - metallic liquorice.

    A medium dark dust nose. Old cellar chalk. No fruit aromas on the nose at all. Acid was almost out of balance. Although aged, clearly significant tannins still exist 7/10.

    This is an easy drinking outdoor summer wine. Medium red with brick color edging. A light smooth drinking wine. Given the age I thought it may have been well past its prime - thankfully it was not.

    This came through stunningly tonight. I have never scored this Cab this high before. Not sure if it was this bottle alone of the balance through the blind tasting.

    Beautiful clean chalk terroir on the nose with solid back bone and tannins (7.5/10) Moderately long finish with the cassis fruit coming through yet some old world dry finish. clearly that space between the new and old world Cab.

    Great to see my consistent scoring over time when I check prior reviews.

    This was one of the top 3 of the night. Clearly a sweetish fruit bomb with a great backbone. Worked well with light curries and malay dishes. Could be too fruity sweet for a steak. Great tannins, strong bodied and the nose had a hint of clean chalk terroir. I might have expected the Malbec and Cab Franc to be more apparent but the Merlot seems to own the day here.

    Most surprisingly, this not only held its own with the sweet syrupy dessert/pudding and vanilla ice cream but actually went very well.
