Flight 1 - Welcome Whites (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Maison Alex Gambal Puligny-Montrachet

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

    Nose has apples, mineral and honey. Palate is crisp with equal doses of apple, mineral and toasty oak. Good polish and balance. Medium, waxy finish. Drinking well now.

  • 2010 Maison Alex Gambal Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Big nose of white fruit, lemons and toasty. Palate is big, broad with large scaled fruit. Shows more stuffing and sweetness than a 2010 village P-M from the Gambal tasted side-by-side. Needs time to unwind.

  • 1999 Château Pavie Decesse

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Attractive nose of red fruit, tobacco, ash, cedar with some brown sugar sweetness. Palate is full bodied with good spice. Some gritty tannin in the finish causing it to end a bit lean. My#6, Group #8. Low 90s.

  • 1999 Château Pavie

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Nose is one-note with rich red fruit, and is a bit angular. Medium full body on the palate. Loads of spice and smooth fruit up front. Some grip and harder tannin in the finish. Group #7, My #7. Low 90s.

  • 1999 Château Pavie Macquin

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Nose has red fruit, herbs and some interesting medicinal notes. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with loads of herb and ash. Nice richness and plushness across the palate and into the finish. My #5, Group #6. Low 90s.

  • 2001 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Killer nose has loads of red and black fruit, herbs, tobacco, cedar and some wood spice. Palate is delicious with medium-rich fruit with loads of herb, mineral and spice adding complexity. So smooth on the finish with well integrated, silky tannin. My #3, Group #3. Mid 90s.

  • 2003 Château Calon-Ségur

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Big red fruit nose is ripe and borderline candied with cedar and coffee notes. Palate is closed down with compact fruit and gritty tannin. Needs time? Group #4, my #8. High 80s today.

  • 2003 Château Pontet-Canet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Nose of red fruit, cedar, herb has some ripeness and richness. Rocking palate has medium-to-full body, rich, polished fruit. Herbs, cedar and mineral add complexity. Still young and un-evolved. Balance is there for a long life. Low to mid 90s. Group #5, my #4.

  • 2004 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Wow nose has delicious red fruit, toast, herbs and attractive green pepper. Love the palate which is herb and green pepper driven with smooth, medium rich red fruit. Very long and persistent. Fantastic, flavorful finish. Ringer among a flight of BDX, but fits in so well. Group #2, my #1. Mid to high 90s.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Tasted double blind and out of magnum. Knock out nose has red fruit, tobacco, asian spice and liquid herbs. Palate is a knock out too! Medium rich fruit with mocha notes, herbs and more asian spice. Tannin is present but well-matched to the fruit leaving a suave grip. Long finish. Terrific showing. Group #1, my #2. High 90s.

Flight 3 - Stickies (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Wow nose explodes with tropical and sweet white fruit and honey. Palate is full, rich and sweet but brings a ton of balancing acidity and freshness. Impeccable. Very strong showing.

  • 2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Big nose of rich white fruit, honey with a coconut note. Palate is rich with lots of fruit but lacks some acidity tonight. Not as balanced as a 2001 La Tour Blanche tasted side by side.
