Introduction

Zak and I decided that we wanted to try the 2 Merkelbach 2012 Kabinetts side by side and blind ... and we threw in the 2012 Leitz just for fun.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Alfred Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Kabinett 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Tasted blind against the UW Kabinett. Wonderful nose - lively with sweet and crisp fruit: lime, strawberry, peach. A complex herbal note of verbuena(?)/lavender. Crisp, floral. with good minerality - the nose really has it all. Delicious on the palate with lime, passion fruit, strawberry, sweet&sour. Excellent minerality. Light and lovely. Juicy citrus and stone on the finish. Classic Kabinett. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finsh - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

  • 2012 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Tasted blind against the Kinheimer Rosenberg Kabinett. More subdued than the other Kabinett: herbal, chalky with minerality and soft citrus. Some spice. Very mineral on the palate with peach, lime - tart - very dusty and flinty. This is good, but #1 (The KR) is showing better - not only that, but the KR also seems to have better focus and more lively acid. Is the UW in a shell? Is this a mediocre bottle? Or is the KR just better? Nose - 4/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5/20.

  • 2012 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Drachenstein Riesling Dragonstone 86 Points

    Quite different than the Merkelbach Kabinetts. This is very bright and juicy with critus - grapefruit and lime, and some ripe apple, honey and spice, white grapes. This is tasty on the palate with the grapefruit, honey, apple - it just doesn't have the complexity or the focus of the Merkelbach's - but that's to be expected. A solid year for this wine, and great QPR. For an everyday drinking wine, this is good. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais quoi - 1/2 = 13/20.
