Flight 1 - Starter White (1 Note)

  • 2000 Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion Blanc 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Tasted double blind. Bold exotic and layered nose with white fruit, floral notes and Asian spice (cardamom?). Palate is still tight and full bodied. Waxy white fruit. Doesn't show much sauv blanc character. Would guess that this needs more time to open up on the palate.

Flight 2 - Pinots (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    Nose is shy and tight - some cherry fruit and floral notes emerge with coaxing. Medium bodied and smooth in the mouth with good acid, but the overall impression is of a tight and clamped down wine. Maybe this just needs more time, but it's solid but not special or particularly interesting today.

  • 1998 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Trenton Estate 94 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Full, bold nose of red and black cherry fruit with a strong spice note. Round and generous yet elegant in the mouth. Cherries, spice, earth and pine notes. Long and flavorful. Terrific showing. Served blind with 1er Cru Burgs and all thought this was Burg. Amazing that it was so generous with great fruit and <13% alcohol.

  • 1988 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Domaine Louis Jadot 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

    Served double blind. Shy, tight nose is not giving much. Youthful palate - with black cherry fruit is very savory and meaty. Great length. Palate showed much younger than 1988.

Flight 3 - Bodeaux (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Léoville Barton 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Served double blind. Rich nose has dark fruit, herbs and black mineral. Palate is initially tight but opens to reveal pencil shavings, tobacco, herb and dark red fruit. Polished with smooth tannins. Fades a little in the finish. Not at it's peak drinking window yet.

  • 1998 Clos du Marquis 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Medium nose is not intense but delivers an array of complex flavors - red fruit, earth, green pepper, herbs and mineral. Palate delivers with terrific power and precision. Delicious medium rich fruit with herbs, tobacco and mineral. Great acid driven lift and kick in the finish. Terrific showing and seems to be in a prime window.

Flight 4 - Northern Rhone (2 Notes)

    Served double blind. Nose is shy and not giving much. Palate is light in body but still delivers good, complex flavor with iron, red and black fruit and lots of black pepper. Lifted and long finish. Lacks intensity and power, but still shows complexity and character.

  • 1996 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 95 Points

    Served double blind. A wow nose with amazing power, depth and complexity with big meaty, olive, bacon and black pepper nose. The nose is savory and unmistakably Cote Rotie. The good times keep rolling on the palate with medium-to-full body and crazy persistence and length. Largely echoes the nose. Meaty and delicious. Long finish.
